Giants, Marlins battle for NL’s worst record

The Miami Marlins and the San Francisco Giants—the two teams with the worst records in the National League—will open a three-game series on Tuesday night at Marlins Park.

Miami just closed a 4-3 road trip with a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over at Washington on Sunday. The Nationals had won the series’ first three games.

The Giants, who have lost five consecutive games, did not play on Monday, using it as a cross-country travel day.

Marlins first baseman Neil Walker, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI on Sunday, believes his team is in a good place.

Interesting match-up to consider, given the very different directions both teams took to get into this position.

An example of how we look differently at the world of baseball now. On first glance, my instinct is that the Giants are in a better spot because they still have tradable assets. But thats' only kinda true.

Belt is a perfectly solid 1B, maybe LF and therefore cromulent DH. If you team needs one of those, you'd be happy to have him. With his experience in LF, an AL team might even be able to squeeze him in as a bench player. But he's owed 2/$34 after this year. The Giants would be lucky to trade him for nothing, more likely they might have to throw money -- all that meaning that they can't really get anything in return for him.

That goes double for Longoria and Posey (at least until he produces again).

Shark is having an excellent season by ERA but the FIP is terrible (5.12 thanks to 1.7 HR/9) and he's owed 1/$20. They've got some relievers teams would be happy to roll the dice on for a couple of months but none with the killer rep that might bring back a good prospect.

That leaves the pending FA Bumgarner who's having a solid but unspectacular season (better by FIP). They'll get something for him but 2 months of him won't bring a king's ransom unless they can find a GM who still believes in his postseason mojo.

So I still think the Giants are the better team right now, but they don't have much in tradeable assets which means they might well be the worse team next year. And b-r puts their payroll next year already at $155 so they're not spending their way out of it. Most everything is cleared out by 2022.
