Giants’ Posey on 7-day concussion list after hit to helmet

DENVER — The San Francisco Giants have placed catcher Buster Posey on the seven-day concussion list after a foul ball hit his helmet on Sunday.

Posey said he was hit in the fourth inning of the game against the Cincinnati Reds. He played in Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

“I recall it happening in Sunday’s game in the fourth inning,” Posey said Thursday. “I can’t remember what batter it was.

“They are going to take extra time to find out how I am. When they examined me (Wednesday) they felt I should have felt more normal after three days. When you are dealing with the brain, you’ve got to be cautious.”

Here’s hoping that this doesn’t have the consequences that it did for Mauer….

Posada had this, too, didn't he?

Yes, unfortunately he tried toughening his head the way he did his hands, but it didn't work ...

It’s a tough life back there but a little foul ding off the cage sounds better than 101 mph fastball to the nuts like Molina got last year. I could barely watch that

Either you're thinking of Moises Alou or I've missed something. Probably the latter.

The latter, there's a reason my nickname for Posada (when he, um, pissed me off) was "piss hands":

Almost every major league baseball player wears batting gloves nowadays.

And then there’s Jorge Posada.

The Yankees veteran never wears gloves.

“I just like the way it feels without them,’’ he says. “I tried ’em when I was younger. I never got used to them.’’

But not using gloves can mean calluses, blisters, and peeling. So Posada followed the advice of longtime outfielder Moises Alou. He urinated on his hands to make them tougher.

“The big joke was you didn’t want to shake Jorge Posada’s hand during spring training,’’ says Globe writer Peter Abraham, who used to cover the Yankees.

Posada sheepishly acknowledges those days are over.

“My wife found out about it and made me stop,’’ he says with a laugh. “Now when my hands get cracked, I use what the trainer gives me.’’

The Orioles’ Vladimir Guerrero is another star player who prefers the barehanded approach.

“I just don’t like the way they feel,’’ he says. “I use just a little tape on my fingers.’’

Guerrero also admits to urinating on his hands. And at least one Red Sox pitcher used to do the same thing.

“I used to pee on my hands, because when my father pitched in Cuba, he did that,’’ says the great Luis Tiant. “He said it really toughened up his hands.’’

And now you know!

There was a boxer that would wear his sons pee diapers on his hands. Said it was ok cause they were sterile...
