Giants slide past Rockies in 18th inning

Brandon Belt opened the 18th inning with a double, and he slid home on Erik Kratz’s bases-loaded ground ball one out later, giving the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies in a game that started on Friday night and ended on Saturday morning.

The win was the Giants’ second in two games in the four-game series and gave them their first winning streak of the season.

Colorado, which led 2-0 but did not score in the final 14 innings, dropped its seventh straight.

The sort of thing that makes you wish the Croix de Candlestick could have survived Candlestick Park somehow.

I see the Giants relievers had 19 strikeouts... that's gotta be a record.

Second time THIS SEASON Iannetta's failed to keep his foot on the plate on a force play. Glad I went to bed after the 11th.

The Rockies struck out 24 times total, not a record. 3 teams have done 26, two in the 2017 season (including the Brewers in just 12 innings). The Angels struck out 26 times in a 20 inning game in 1971. Pretty amazing stat lines. Vida Blue struck out 17 in 11 innings, and Rollies Fingers K'd 7 in 7 innings in relief.

In the Rockies-Giants game, in the bottom of the 18th with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Rockies put Parra on to load the bases. They then pulled Desmond in from the OF to play 5 IF's drawn in. Kratz hit a ball towards the 2B-1B hole and Hampson had to throw off balance and threw a bit low to home. Iannetta stretched for it and pulled his foot off home.

Iannetta also went 0-4 with 4 K's for a -0.348 WPA. Kratz caught all 18 innings.

He was saying the 19 strikeouts from relievers was possibly a record.

Interesting that Tom Murphy got picked up by Seattle. I hope he sticks as the backup, it will be interesting to see how he fares as the season goes on. Rockies have such a huge hole still at catcher and with their bench as a whole.

19 strikeouts from relievers TIES the record. I found two other times it’s happened:

* Orioles vs the Senators, 1967 (in a 19-inning game).

* Nationals vs Braves, 2013, in a 15-inning game.

They love Wolters' defense, and you can see why. He's thrown out five out of nine would-be stealers this year. But the boy just can't hit at all.

Iannetta stretched for it and pulled his foot off home.

Actually, if you watch the replay, he NEVER had his foot on home plate. It wasn't like he moved it to reach the throw...he simply started with his foot off the base the entire time.
