Gleeman: Mat Gamel is out for the season with another knee injury

Judge John Hodgman recently ruled that cats do have elbows, so hopefully Cat Gamel’s elbows and knees are both okay.

Mat Gamel aggravated his surgically repaired right knee over the weekend, but as of yesterday the Brewers seemed optimistic that it was a minor issue and he could resume workouts as soon as today.

Unfortunately because Gamel has basically the worst luck ever Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that he’s going to miss the entire season.

Gamel tore his ACL in May of last year, costing the former top prospect a chance to establish himself replacing Prince Fielder as the Brewers’ starting first baseman. He hasn’t played since and now this latest setback costs him an opportunity to fill in for Corey Hart, who’s out for a couple months with a knee injury of his own.

This is too bad. Gamel was probably not going to be especially good but it's possible he could have had a career as a Wes Helms type. That seems unlikely now.

Aww:
Sure, it’s cliche to think of Major League teammates as family. But Corey Hart proved today that it can also be true.

Hart has already extended an offer for Mat Gamel to move in with Hart and his family for the remainder of Spring Training. Hart, recovering from his own knee surgery, has a guest house available, and figures Gamel could use some company while he begins another long year of rehab after knee surgery.

“I’ll try to help him out as much as I can,” Hart said. “It stinks, because I was pumping him up. Hopefully I’ll be here a long time, but I was trying to be realistic [about Hart’s impending free agency] and telling him, look, I might not be here and this might be your one month to showcase it. [Now] I can just hug him and hope it works out.”

ESPN:
Roenicke said candidates to play first until Hart returns include Alex Gonzalez, Hunter Morris, Bobby Crosby, Taylor Green and Sean Halton.

Holy crap. That's some bad first base options.

I'm glad the Angels aren't the only team unable to develop corner players who - you know - hit like corner players.

Mark Trumbo seems like the Platonic Ideal of the perfectly cromulent corner player who hits like a corner player.
