Globe & Mail: Jays drop battle for first place

It was a battle of the early-season titans, and, no, you don’t have to adjust your reading glasses.

It really did feature the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles, not the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees as we’ve all been programmed to expect from recent seasons.
...
And by the time the frost settled — the game-time temperature was 14, with a stiff breeze blowing through Camden Yards — it was the Orioles who found themselves roosting all alone at the top of the standings, thanks to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays last night.

The spectacle of two teams jostling for first place did not exactly capture the imagination of Orioles fans, who for the most part chose to sit this one out, with only 11,510 on hand.
...
“They outpitched us, they outhit us and they outplayed us,” came the succinct summation from Jays manager John Gibbons. “But we hung tough. We made it scary.”

It’s like 1989 all over again!

Another lousy night for baseball and a good night for the O's. I'm waiting for a night when I don't need to wear a ski mask to actually go to a game, though. We've had one three-day stretch of warmer weather since the season started, and it was this past weekend when the O's were playing in the Tampa white elephant. It's supposed to be nice this weekend, but I've gotta work, so the O's may be closer to last than first when I actually get to go to the Yard.

Still, enjoying this on TV while it lasts.

If you can't beat the orioles, I'm sorry, you are not going to do anything serious.

So everybody should go undefeated against Baltimore?

The pen seems to be HR prone lately, but they are still winning so I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Adam Jones looks like he's starting to get comfortable.

Bob's right, it'll be much nicer for O's fans once summer arrives and they can cover their shame with cooling-paper bags instead of those clingy ski masks.

Hey, Baltimore's a blue-collar town. I've always stuck with just a plain lunch sack, though I admit I don't wear used ones after being overwhelmed by onion fumes one Saturday afternoon towards the end of the 'Maz Era.'
