He was not Paul Godfrey’s first choice. Or his second, or third. As J.P. Ricciardi went about his business this spring, the general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays was asked one day whether he thought his job was in jeopardy after six years without a playoff berth.
“Nobody’s told me this year is bigger than any other year,” Ricciardi said. “I’ve never heard from anybody that my job’s on the line. I don’t know … maybe I’ll go into TV. Maybe I’ll do ESPN.”
Hi-Yo!....A rotting..ehh..vein-bursting Johnny corpse…uhh..zinger for you!
Ricciardi has gone from being one of the game’s bright young things — a disciple of Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane when Moneyball was all the rage — to somebody hammered by the same people who once sang his praises. In his first year with Toronto, Ricciardi admonished a reporter one day for using a copy of the staid old Sporting News Register as a reference source.
“You need this,” Ricciardi said, sliding a copy of Baseball Prospectus across his desk.
No more. That publication believes he has broken faith with the Moneyball principles, or at least hasn’t changed with them.
“Look, it’s not what kind of farm system you have or how many prospects you have, it’s what you do at the major-league level,” Ricciardi said.

1. philly Posted: March 29, 2008 at 03:44 PM (#2723088)I wish they hadn't cut off the quote. "And at the major league level we've won 78, 86, 67, 80, 87 and 83 games and I proudly stand behind that record."
He's not very good.
-> know the sporting news register isn't the best reference source AND
-> not be a very good general manager.
"Admits". Might be the first time he's done that in a long while. Would have loved to see an accompanying quote with this, or was it just an acknowledging head nod?
I just hope he's fully recovered from last year's injuries--it'd be a shame to lose that arm. I still want him to be a starter though. Getting back to 2005, he had a BB/9 of 2.5 and a SO/9 of 9.8--not bad for a kid of 22.
Best Regards
John
Yip.
Nope ... I've got Teletoon Retro and yes, I watch Bugs and friends although I'm partial to Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson's episodes. The newer ones aren't as demented as my tastes demand.
Best Regards
John
Of all the things you can hang JP for, I think most of them are far enough in the past that penalizing him for them doesn't really help the team. He's finally got the pitching pretty well set, the defense is great, and the offense could be good enough to make them competitive if everyone rebounds. Snider will be an impact player in 2 years, but by then he'll have to replace Thomas. The problem is they ran through their down cycle without coming away from it with a good deal of cheap talent...
Of course, it would also doom him to months of articles about 'chemistry' from the MSM, too
Sure, but the Blue Jays have also had the fortune of playing 1/4 of their games against the Rays and O's. That's got to do some canceling out of the heavy dose of Yankees-Red Sox.
