Just to be a pedant, what he actually said would be translated better as:
"Despite the bravery of our troops in the Army and Navy, the energy of our government officials, the sacrifices of our 100 million people, and our best efforts, the war situation has absolutely not improved for the better, and we have had no advantage in world trends (read= the political front)."
