HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Another bullpen day for the Angels. Should be ugly.

Shildt gets a 3-year contract to manage the Cardinals.

Mike Puma @NYPost_Mets
My major takeaway from John Ricco's conference call earlier: If the Mets are going to resume paying David Wright his full salary they want him to be a Major League player. Right now insurance is covering 75 percent.

This collection of players have gone 36-21 over the last two months.

Take a good look.

Like, they’re still 8.5 games out of a playoff spot, and there’s just not enough time left to expect them to make that up. But still. COME ON!!! Raise your hand if you know even half of their players!!!

Ok so who’s gonna win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

Ok so who’s gonna win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

Be surprised if it's Bader, so much of his value is defensive and I'm not sure many people outside of St. Louis had heard of him until about 2 weeks ago.
   7. Bote Man Posted: August 28, 2018 at 07:19 PM (#5735117)
Two Walter Johnson candidates face off in Philly. Aaron Nola handily dispatched the Nationals on only 8 pitches, now Max Scherzer trying his luck.
   8. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 07:21 PM (#5735119)
Also, his defensive number are possibly to likely inflated. Whether he deserves it or not, bader will finish 3rd at best.

Ok so who’s gonna win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?
If Ohtani pitches anything in September like he did in May, he'll win going away. Also, Scioscia's started protecting him from lefties — his platoon split is enormous in his half-season — so his August looks like .333/.419/.722 in 62 PAs.

Somehow Lynn has not given up a run ...

...it's the White Sox.
   12. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:02 PM (#5735131)
Sox up 2-1, 2 guys on in the 3rd.
   13. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:04 PM (#5735132)
Moreland K's with runners on 2nd and 3rd....
   14. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:06 PM (#5735133)
You know what you Cubs fans need? Mets fans in chatter.
   15. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:11 PM (#5735134)
Sox up 3-1, Johnson not really fooling anyone though. Marlins have 4 hits, 3XBH, he's getting hit hard. Sox going to need at least 6 runs to win this...
   16. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:18 PM (#5735137)
Hamels good, though he has been a smidge shaky in all his first innings, iirc.
   17. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:18 PM (#5735138)
WOOOOHOOOOOOO Nimmo!
   18. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:19 PM (#5735139)
Also, boooooo Conforto.
   19. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:22 PM (#5735141)
Holy Toledo that pitch to Baez was nasty.
   20. Bote Man Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:23 PM (#5735142)
Nola has 1-hit the Nats through 4 innings, now Max starts the bottom of the 4th also having surrendered 1 hit. But Max "hit" Nick Williams on the sleeve and has been ever so slightly less sharp than Nola. Still, a great pitchers' duel going on in Philly between 2 also-ran teams.

Well, now Odúbel Herrera just barely squeaks a fly ball into the 1st row in RF at Citizen's Bank Bandbox for Max's requisite home run. 1-0 Phillies in the 4th.
   21. salvomania Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:29 PM (#5735143)
Ok so who’s gonna win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

Flaherty is having a damn good rookie season---sub-3.00 era, 6.2 hits per 9, he'll end up fanning around 180-190 batters in about 150 ip. He's 22, and his future looks bright.
   22. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:32 PM (#5735145)
Ok so who’s gonna win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

Close enough that it is still to be determined in the AL. There's been some resistance to half-season (or less) candidates such as Gary Sanchez & Trea Turner, even if they looked to be the best player going forward. Whether Ohtani's injury-absence will be treated similarly is uncertain, but the voters are conditioned to look for a full season's work. A vote now might be Andujar, Torres & Ohtani in that order, but it could change. I doubt anyone outside that trio can win, or even crack the top three.
   23. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:33 PM (#5735146)
Bruce's existence induces rage, but that was an awesome play.
   24. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5735147)
Red Sox bullpening it from the 5th on, trying to hold a 3-1 lead. Workman working hard to get out of the 5th without surrendering run(s)
   25. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5735148)
OK, that does it, Sox still up 3-1 after Marlins turn in the 5th.
   26. Meatwad Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:48 PM (#5735151)
The caught stealing was nice but they shoulda been out of this inning already. Murpheys bat givith and his glove taketh.
   27. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:49 PM (#5735152)
Double steal seemed like kind of a stupid idea.

Also, boooo Conforto. Could see that coming a mile away.
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:52 PM (#5735153)
Sox still holding up at 3-1 after the Marlins 6th. Just looking at the box score, an IF that includes Moreland, Nunez and the previously great, but not so much any longer Kinsler does not inspire a great deal of confidence. Thankfully the OF catches everything and for the most part, rakes along with the DH.
   29. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5735154)
and of course the aforementioned Nunez reads primer omnichatter, takes offense to my post in #28 and promptly HRs....
   30. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 08:58 PM (#5735156)
Too early to say this game will be decided by the bullpens?
   31. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:03 PM (#5735159)
And the Cubs look like they'll get to theirs first.
   32. Brian C Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:03 PM (#5735160)
Too early to say this game will be decided by the bullpens?

Where's Luke Farrell when you need him?
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:05 PM (#5735162)
Be surprised if it's Bader, so much of his value is defensive and I'm not sure many people outside of St. Louis had heard of him until about 2 weeks ago.

Agreed. I just don't see his "real" numbers being good enough, and as you pointed out, his fame is relatively new.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:07 PM (#5735163)
Also, his defensive number are possibly to likely inflated. Whether he deserves it or not, bader will finish 3rd at best.

Why would you think that? I mean there is reasons to think there is some inflation in defensive numbers, but a guy who has been a career centerfielder in the minors, who won the minor league equivalent to a gold glove in center, and who is listed by statcast as the third fastest player in baseball, that plays a position where speed is probably the single most important skill....why would you think it's "notably" inflated?

Note: I think Acuna is going to win easily, and Soto will easily get second, but not sure I'm going to agree with that vote, or if it's defensible.
   35. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:10 PM (#5735164)
That didn't look good.
   36. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:10 PM (#5735165)
EDIT: ok maybe not so bad.
   37. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:11 PM (#5735166)
"notably"

I didn't say that.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:12 PM (#5735168)
Cardinal announcers are pretty sure that Yadier is going to bail on this game early due to injury.
   39. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:12 PM (#5735169)
Tsk. Almost..
   40. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5735170)
deGrom gets out of this inning, I don't think he'll return.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5735171)
I didn't say that.

Okay, it's inflated by 3 runs then, it doesn't really make a difference in the stat then.
   42. Brian C Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5735172)
Why would you think that [his defensive numbers are possibly to likely inflated]? I mean there is reasons to think there is some inflation in defensive numbers,

Oh, maybe that's why.
   43. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:15 PM (#5735173)
Cubs have at least 4 really hard hit balls, 3 being outs. They're squaring him up at least.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:17 PM (#5735174)
O'Neil makes it 4-0 Cardinals... two, two run homeruns today.... #### this bs about small ball. This is how you win games.
   45. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:19 PM (#5735176)
I stand corrected.
   46. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:19 PM (#5735177)
Tsk tsk javy
   47. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5735178)
The Nationals finally, MAYBE, get a chance to get back into this game.
   48. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:20 PM (#5735179)
Rosario looking good lately.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:21 PM (#5735180)
Oh, maybe that's why.

3 or so runs, but still he's at 3.7, and Acuna is at 3.5 and Anderson is at 3.3... give up a few runs and he's still among the leaders in the conversation.

Of course it's going to matter who does what in September, both Acuna and Bader are guys who have roughly 320 pa so far this season, a month can massively affect their numbers either way. Bader is obviously in the conversation, even accepting the uncertainty of the value of defensive stats, simply because of the sheer number of people talking about his defense the last month or so.

It's still Acuna's to lose, I don't think anyone is denying that.
   50. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:23 PM (#5735181)
Well, that was interesting. 3-2 Phillies.
   51. Howie Menckel Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5735182)
Mets top prospect Peter Alonso, already over the 100 RBI mark at AA-AAA this year, describes Mets decision to pass on a September callup "disheartening and disappointing."

gotta keep him hungry!
   52. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:26 PM (#5735183)
Not super-confident here.
   53. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:27 PM (#5735184)

   54. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:28 PM (#5735186)
Is he done now? That's a hard night of work so far.
   55. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:28 PM (#5735187)
Conforto just has never had it tonight. That is not a surprise.
   56. Bote Man Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:30 PM (#5735188)
The Nationals finally, MAYBE, get a chance to get back into this game.

Not when Max starts. Those 2 runs only scored by the grace of the Phillies "defense".
   57. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:41 PM (#5735191)
Ump show in Philly.
   58. cardsfanboy Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:44 PM (#5735192)
Yadier needs to be pulled now.. No reason for him to stay in this game while injured.
   59. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:48 PM (#5735194)
This ump in Chicago is terrible. That was clearly strike 3, and an out on the steal. #######.
   60. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:51 PM (#5735196)
Point of accuracy, it was the definition of a borderline strike, as per the technology everyone wants to replace the umps with.
   61. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:52 PM (#5735198)
HICKSIE! 4-4 tie after trailing 4-0.

Now finish the job, and who knows, the Marlins might actually hold on.
   62. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5735199)
Point of accuracy, it was the definition of a borderline strike, as per the technology everyone wants to replace the umps with.

Per the technology, a strike is a strike. It has been a strike tonight, but so have multiple balls. Iow, big zone shrinks at in opportune time. Call the zone, but just as importanly be consistent. Ftr both teams have some complaints tonight.
   63. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5735200)
Good AB from Nimmo.
   64. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:58 PM (#5735201)

   67. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 09:59 PM (#5735205)
Per the technology, a strike is a strike.

Yes, it was a strike. A strike on the border of the zone, which I wouldn't consider a clearly obvious strike, but a borderline strike. YMMV. -shrug-

deGrom! Unexpected.

Anthony Rendon may have won the Cy Young for Max Scherzer just now.
   70. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:04 PM (#5735208)
OK, that was scary.
   71. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:06 PM (#5735210)

Great, so I go away for 20 minutes and the Red Sox soil the bed, but now tied it up on a JBJ single with the bases loaded.
   73. Jay Seaver Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5735212)
Jackie Bradley Junior with a heck of a clutch hit in the bottom of the 8th.

Is he on a hot streak? He seems to be looking a lot better at the plate lately.
   74. Jay Seaver Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5735214)
Is the Marlins' bullpen phone broken?
   75. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:10 PM (#5735215)
Oh no, Neshek lost that game. I hate when something bad happens to him.

Nice, the guy with the .345 OPS! drive in runs against Kimbrel.

   94. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5735241)
Weather is ominous. Extra innings aren't a good idea.

Phillie pinch running pitcher on second base leaves early on flyball to CF, is called out to end the game. Now under review but seems clear.

EDIT: Nationals win. The Phillies don't seem to be good on fundamentals of late.
   96. Bote Man Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5735244)
Phillies make the final out as pinch runner Vince Velasquez left 2B early on a fly ball out #2 to end it after the Nats appeal. Of course, the Phillies are asking for replay review because...why not when the game is on the line.
   97. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5735245)
Way to screw it up, Mets.

That's the best CJ has looked in a long time.
   99. Textbook Editor Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5735248)
Kimbrel had a bad stretch at the start of August too. Hopefully this is a blip but... I confess I felt way more safe handing the ball to Foulke in 2004, Papelbon in 2007, and Koji in 2013 than I do handing it to Kimbrel in 2018. He's got a Mitch Williams c.1993 vibe about him sometimes that scares the hell out of me.
   100. Jay Seaver Posted: August 28, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5735249)
The Red Sox' first 4-game-losing streak averted in ugly fashion, but I will take it.
