Tonight has not seen a lot of crisp baseball, more like soggy corn flakes baseball.

Rare walk-off booted double play win for Red Sox. Grrr.

Boston squeaks out a win with a force out/error.

They are really struggling to get wins these past few days, but hey, they all count!

Thank the maker.

This team needs to get it together but that’s the kind of game they need to pull out. I’ll take it.

Is anybody else finding MLB.tv just going into cardiac arrest at random? It has been happening more and more frequently for me on both Chrome and Firefox lately. TNX.

Does that happen everytime the Nats win or the Red Sox lose? Because those 2 events will cause the earth to stop spinning on it's axis...

My MLB.tv on the TV went completely haywire tonight---about 45 minutes ago, couldn't get any feed stable for more than about a minute.

Switched to the laptop and haven't had any issues.

Felix Hernandez once hit a grand slam. Tonight, he's bunted into two double plays, and trails 2-0 in the 5th.
   109. Lassus Posted: August 28, 2018 at 11:08 PM (#5735263)
Jesus, what a mess of a game.

Kimbrel had a bad stretch at the start of August too. Hopefully this is a blip but... I confess I felt way more safe handing the ball to Foulke in 2004, Papelbon in 2007, and Koji in 2013 than I do handing it to Kimbrel in 2018. He's got a Mitch Williams c.1993 vibe about him sometimes that scares the hell out of me.

Concur. I've seen too many of his shaky games to trust him like I did those other guys.
   111. Howie Menckel Posted: August 28, 2018 at 11:11 PM (#5735265)
as of the 8th inning, deGrom had a 1.55 ERA in 23 starts

Dwight Gooden had the same ERA in his first 24 starts in 1985

DeGrom 8-8, Gooden 18-3

now Gooden had a 12-1 edge in CG, so of course they wouldn't be even

but that ball that "first baseman" Jay Bruce missed in the big spot to allow the Cubs to tie the game?
Gooden had Keith "Hoover" Hernandez instead

8th inning, hits with runners in scoring position so far
Mets 1-13
Cubs 0-2

who got the Mets hit? i think you can guess
#cyfuckingyoung

tremendous AB by rookie McNeil, who rakes, in 7th. Ron Darling - who badly needs to be traded to a contending announcing booth by Aug 31 - noting how teams learned already that McNeil kills early-count fastballs.

so de la Rosa keeps throwing him slop, and McNeil keeps fouling them off. 10th or 11th pitch, McNeil crushes one that, it is noted, would have been long gone an hour earlier. but seasons change, and the ball stays in the park. McNeil busting it all the way for a leadoff triple. what a bush league move - he failed to admire his rip!

then two lineout bullets, because someone reminded God that deGrom is pitching - and 1-0 it is. until it isn't.

at least some Cubs fans saw deGrom beast mode. Scherzer has it, too, but some don't know deGrom has it. especially since he got married and got rid of the boy-band locks.

Huh. This weirdness has been happening on my desktop computer. Even though it's no DJS Dandy gamer rig, it can hack most tasks. I guess I cleared all my Chrome cookies and browser stored data for nothing. Lovely.

Looks like it's even affecting live play as the Mets @ Cubs are now in a delay. That's some buggy code right there.

cards win!

i too had issues with my MLBTV feed in the middle innings. had to repeatedly refresh cuz it kept hanging up.

I will be surprised if this game resumes today.

Agreed. After looking at the radar we left as the first drops were falling. Getting a cab proved...moistening. But we made it back home, and I flipped on MLB Network while cleaning the kitchen. Anyone else watching who can confirm my half-listening impression that Harold Reynolds just revealed that he does not know the difference between Odubel Herrera and Asdrubal Cabrera?

He was truly impressive tonight. Throwing 98 in the 8th. Also, McNeil is surprisingly really fast. He was already rounding second by the time the ball landed on his triple, a good 20 feet further than I expected him to be.
   117. spanx for the memories Posted: August 29, 2018 at 12:01 AM (#5735276)
A's win. Amazing what can happen when you don't allow many runners on 2nd base to steal signs.

he's not that fast. and as I noted, for a rookie to be busting it like that in a park that was playing much shorter an hour earlier - that sure as hell looked like a guy who was all-in on trying (and failing) to get deGrom a win with a leadoff triple and a 1-0 lead.

vibe was late-blooming overachiever who is not going to "settle in" to laid-back MLB mode. the Mets may have an intriguing semi-young hitter there.
   119. The Ghost of Sox Fans Past Posted: August 29, 2018 at 12:12 AM (#5735282)
Mariners chase the starter after about 80 pitches.

In the ninth, with one out. Way to work the count, M's.

You're coming dangerously close to supporting SBB's "baseball is terrible because no triples because LAZY OAFS!!" theory here.

Game officially suspended. Resumes tomorrow at 12. Next game starts 45 minutes later. Bote leads off the 10th, just saying.

Maddon already said he's sitting a bunch of regulars tmrw and we should expect a crazy lineup. Ok then.

Joe Maddon on Jacob deGrom: “That guy is as advertised. That’s another level of stuff.”

...........

as far as the triples post, not all-in on that at all. a 34-year-old vet with a leadoff bullet in the gap in a close game - stop at 2nd. I even like the "never make the first or third out at third base."

this was more a younger, healthy guy who crushed one and who, without great speed, made it easily because he busted it from step one.
   123. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 29, 2018 at 12:48 AM (#5735291)
I think I have to concede the point re: McNeil's speed, because apparently he ranks 253rd in sprint speed at 27.4, tied with Ichiro (!), Anthony Rendon, Gleyber Torres, Dexter Fowler and Willson Contreras, among others - but just ahead of the likes of Bryce Harper, Juan Soto and Rafael Devers.
   124. Howie Menckel Posted: August 29, 2018 at 12:53 AM (#5735295)
Ripken, that's not on you - that is busting it 110 percent on a crushed pitch

I was really hoping to sleep in tomorrow (today, really).

Unnamed government sources report that Harold said something like "Asdubel Carrera" which, for him, is actually putting in some effort to pronounce a name.

Rockies back in first place.

re: Kimbrel. If we are scared about the guy who has a lower lifetime ERA than Mariano Rivera; who has the best H/( ratio of any pitcher in MLB history; who has allowed 30 hits in 53 innings this year, as well as ONE hit in his last 5 innings.... then we are worried about EVERYTHING.
   129. TomH Posted: August 29, 2018 at 09:57 AM (#5735384)
If you can worry about Kimbrel, who has the best H/9 of any arm in MLB history, and a lower career ERA than Mo Rivera, who has allowed only 30 hits in 53 IP this season, and only 1 hit in his last 5 appearances...
   130. TomH Posted: August 29, 2018 at 10:01 AM (#5735388)
(sorry for double post, which won't let me edit)
TRIVIA for tonight:
I "lead" the AL in being caught stealing. And I only have 10 successful steals this year. Who am I, this blundering baserunner?

Somebody wake up hombre for a new chatter. And Bote for botes ab.
   132. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 29, 2018 at 01:16 PM (#5735528)
OK, OK! I'm up now! This is weird: Blerry Jevins is on the mound and it's the 10th inning. It's like the game never ended!
   133. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 29, 2018 at 01:22 PM (#5735534)
I wonder if I could have saved my ticket from last night and gone to the park to see them finish it.
   134. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 29, 2018 at 01:24 PM (#5735536)
No you can't. They specifically said it was just today's tickets were good.

Jesse Chavez is a gang-banger in real life.
   136. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: August 29, 2018 at 01:33 PM (#5735549)
That's just some dumb luck by Flores. He spanked the ball directly into the glove of the 2Bman who doubled off the runner trying to get back to 1B, inning over. Just the way they practice it.

Well that's bullsh*t. I (well, my friend) bought) a ticket for the game. I should get to see the whole game if I want.

Paul Sewald does his best Lester-to-1B imitation, throws away a sure out on a bunt by Caratini. You can't make up this stuff, folks!

Bases loaded, nobody out for Almora.

Mets gonna mets.

Almora is a mess these days.

Javy's javying ability has progressed to where he can channel his javying through other players' bodies. Kind of like what people can apparently do with the Force these days.
   142. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 29, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5735564)
Javy didn't see the bad throw otherwise I bet he scores there.

Four day games this afternoon. Pairs well with the heat enveloping about half of the country.
