Gorches: Numbers, not innuendo, should keep McGwire out of hall

Gorches and pitchforks anyone?

“Big Mac” had 583 home runs, but those are the most worthless 583 home runs in Major League Baseball history. In fact, no one who has hit more than 500 home runs is as worthless as McGwire.

Again, forget for a minute that McGwire’s are likely steroid-induced dingers.

His 583 towering shots were almost 36 percent of his career hits total of 1,626.

That’s right, he had only 1,626 hits. You tell me a Hall of Famer who had that only many hits. It’s also easily the highest percentage of any player with more than 500 career home runs.

...I consider Thome in the same category as McGwire—not a Hall of Famer. He was a better overall player than McGwire, but in this day and age of inflated numbers, Thome isn’t good enough yet.

Your comments are far more logical than what SugarBear is throwing out there, but as for change in approach, doesn't the league overall hit better with runners on (or RISP) than with the bases empty

The league does, but it's not a big difference and it's partially an issue of selection. (As in a certain percentage of the bad hitters get pinch-hit for)

I did a study of every player with 1,000+ PAs with RISP between 1984 and 1998.

They hit .275/.346/.432/.340 overall and .278/.369/.430/.345 with RISP.

The last number being OBP with IBB removed. Didn't think to remove SF and I don't feel like re-doing this. Won't change the essential conclusion.

Interesting, Ron. Right; not a big difference.
