Grant: Rudy Jaramillo, Rangers to part ways

Dallas-raised Rudy Jaramillo, the Rangers hitting instructor for the last 15 seasons, has turned down the club’s one-year contract offer and is preparing to explore the free agent market after his contract expires October 31.

Jaramillo, who turned 59 on September 20, has been a player, coach or manager in the Rangers’ organization for 26 of his 31 years in baseball.

Rangers officials met with Jaramillo shortly after the season to extend the one-year offer but to also stipulate that the offense needed to improve. The Rangers ranked seventh in runs scored in the AL in 2009, but ranked 11th of 14 teams in batting average (.260) and 12th in on-base percentage (.320). There were concerns about the team’s approach, particularly how often the Rangers swung at first pitches and put themselves in unfavorable hitting counts.

I'm hearing that he's rumored to be a candidate for the Cubs' hitting coach gig.

The Mets better be calling this guy as soon as possible, since it looks like they intend to keep Frenchy.

Rudy J was a finalist for the Mets mgr job when Willie Randolph was hired and is a FOO so the Mets could be in the hunt to add him to the staff and shift HoJo to the first base coaching line

It's probably time for the Rangers to move in another direction. While Jaramillo has had some notable successes in reinvigorating the careers of some marginal hitters, he didn't seem to able to reach the 2009 squad. Almost every hitter on the team went through an especially ghastly slump at some time during the year. Chris Davis had to be sent to the minors for an overhaul, Blalock continued his slide into oblivion and Kinsler, despite his 30/30 year looked lost for much of the season, overswinging from the heels. The 2008 team would take a walk but this year's version showed no command of the strike zone at all. Obviously, most of the blame has to go the players but it seemed that corrections mighty slow in coming, a sign that Jaramillo was no longer being heeded.

He could DH for the Royals.

Naw, they'd rather trade prospects for him, free agency be damned. I trust Moore to figure out a way.

If the Mets don't send a gold-crustered chartered jet to pick him up, they're even more incompetent than I thought. Omar, come on! It's Jar-a-ME-yo!
