Grantland Network Podcast: Jonah Keri with Jon Heyman

Jack Morris ~ IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FEAR! ~ Jim Rice

The Jonah Keri Podcast returns with its Canadian blend of baseball news and meta-talk. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and MLB Network stops by to cover the trade deadline. We discuss the Dodgers’ pursuit of pitching; the fates of Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, and Matt Garza; the surprisingly gun-shy Yankees; the stuck-in-limbo Jays; the what-the-hell-do-we-do-now Pirates, Mets, and Orioles; and a lot more.

The conversation then shifts to the state of the baseball journalism industry, with a focus on breaking-news reporting. How has Twitter changed the landscape? And can we trust what an agent tells us? Finally, Jon weighs in with Hall of Fame thoughts, including Jim Rice, Jack Morris, and Reggie Jackson being colossally wrong on a certain catcher.

Why is the Yankees' "gun-shyness" surprising. It's depressing as hell but they've got a 7 game lead in their division and, barely, the best record. They're trying to limit payroll and make sure they get the luxury tax re-set (when does that happen again?). Once Gardner is back, they're average or better everywhere except maybe C. If they believe in Pettitte then they have a very solid 4-man rotation which is all they'll need in the playoffs. The bullpen is interesting but not necessarily a problem -- and I haven't heard any decent reliever rumors.

So I'm left wondering what move the Yanks should pull the trigger on. A short-term rental on Hamels would make them pretty hard to beat but I don't see anything else particularly attractive. Unless Gardner's not coming back in which case they could use an OF.

It was funny when Heyman literally couldn't find words to explain why he switched from "no" to "yes" on Rice. Then, what he eventually ended up saying was pablum.

At least Heyman changed his mind for the better on Tim Raines and Ron Santo, though. And since he's voting for Dave Parker and Dale Murphy in addition to Rice, I have to give him some points for having a philosophy -- he's voting for the other peak-only OF too.

The cuteness of the we-both-know-what-we're-really-talking-about-but-let's-not-say-it Boras discussion was amusing.
