How did you spend your Thursday night? Or the wee small hours of Friday morning?
The Greensboro Grasshoppers played a 19-inning, 5-hours-and-9-minutes marathon against the West Virginia Power. On the final Thirsty Thursday of the season at NewBridge Bank Park, the beer taps were shut off for the last 11 innings.
The game ended after midnight when Christian Yelich—who sent it to extra innings with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth—lifted the Hoppers to a 5-4 victory by hitting an RBI single. Off the starting second baseman.
Kevin Mort, who went 3-for-7 with a double, moved from second base to the mound in the 14th inning to spare West Virginia’s pitching staff. He was the fifth pitcher of the long night for the Power. The first four were all left-handers.
When Mort came on, the Power had taken a 4-2 lead. He couldn’t hold it, giving up a lead-off single to Ryan Fisher, a one-out double to Danny Black, Isaac Galloway’s sacrifice fly, then pinch-hitter Aaron Dudley’s two-out RBI single.
And the game dragged on. Because infielder-turned-pitcher Mort followed with four scoreless innings.

Are they still in that old Memorial Stadium (or whatever it was called)? It was a crumbling piece of crap but an impressive looking crumbling piece of crap that made you feel like you were going to a baseball stadium not a bunch of rent-a-bleachers. And I recall a decent beer garden along the LF line but I might be confusing that with something else.
