Greg Downey: Roid Age: steroids in sport and the paradox of pharmacological puritanism

Via Andrew Sullivan.  Long, but an interesting read.

By the 1880s, French physiologist Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard developed an ‘elixir’, a concentrated extract derived from guinea pig and dog testicles, that he believed would capture the essence of masculinity, including increased strength and intellectual ability.

In 1889, US baseball pitcher James ‘Pud’ Galvin openly injected the Brown-Séquard Elixir, especially toward the end of his remarkable career (Halverson 2011). In contrast to McGwire, Galvin was an early inductee into the Hall of Fame, as he was the first pitcher to notch 300 wins in the professional leagues (Coincidentally, Galvin was also born in St. Louis. But I digress…). In fact, as Halverson (2011) points out, Galvin was actually praised by the media at the time for demonstrating the value of the Brown-Séquard Elixir.

I submitted this same link. It's a steroids article that's not stupid.

Up until the Commies started winning gold medals better living through chemistry was much praised in America, or at the very least not taken very seriously.

For instance in the Sporting News in the late 40's and 50's they had an article about how some crazy kook was going around the ballclubs and offering teams his services. His services were basically whatever kind of primitive steroids they had at the time and promises that it would make the players better. He got laughed off the field.

A good read. I think the gray area is only going to get worse as drugs we consider "performance enhancing" now are used more and more as basic medical treatment. Why can't things be easy!

Brings new meaning to Galvin's nickname.

You know reading your name incorrectly is a lot of fun.

#3 I'm old enough to remember when we were assured that there was no need to worry about steroids -- they simply didn't work.

When I was a wee lad they only existed to turn Communist women into Communist men. Lousy Commies!

Man this is a long argument:

FOR ANDY:

By the Berlin Olympiad in 1936, amphetamines were the dominant performance enhancing drug, not just for the athletes; records recovered show that Hitler received eight injections a day at the height of his use (some say that he can be seen in film of the Olympiad exhibiting some of the signature gestures of amphetamine users, such as compulsive rubbing of the thighs).
