Greg Holland to sign deal with Cardinals

Finally.

Free-agent closer Greg Holland has agreed to a deal with the Cardinals pending a physical, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told MLB.com. MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, who was first to report the sides were close, said the one-year deal is for a reported $14 million.

Lance Lynn and Greg Holland sign deals for one year and a combined $26 million dollars. Any contender would want that.

I'm not sure what he was expecting, but that's not a bad deal from his perspective considering he hasn't been elite since before his lost season.

Don't get why the Cardinals would forego a pick and international signing money for one year of Holland at $14MM.

(I guess the point might be that the Cardinals don't have a longer term commitment with Holland, and they are willing to forego a pick and money for that. Seems like a strange deal, though).

It's better to trade one year of Yovani Gallardo for Corey Knebel.

This is so ####### stupid. The Cardinals are flush with cheap, live arms.

1.4 WAR from 2017 (the only year he has pitched in the last 2) values this deal at $10 million a win. When people are creating their poof of collusion charts for the 2017/2018 off-season, can we be sure to include this deal as evidence of no collusion?

Not sure this deal makes any sense. I would rather have a bevy of young minor league guys and the veteran's we have competing for the job.

Cards are flooding the zone with relievers but the only real news is that we will lose three players off our 40 man for no apparent reason. Valera, Lucas, and whomever they choose for Holland will all be gobbled up. I’m sure we just made florida, Detroit or San Diego much better teams

A successful reliever can't get a multi-year deal and has to sign at the last minute and you think that's evidence against collusion?

He's not that successful and 1/$14m is better than a lot of multi-year deals that other successful relievers got. And he didn't have to sign at the last minute; he could have had 1/$17 last fall...

He also supposedly turned down a 3 year deal from the Rockies that was said to be in the vicinity of what Wade Davis signed for.

Holland's 2017 ERA's by month:

1.50
1.17
1.69
2.25
13.50
1.86

His August was as painful as that 13.50 looks. That happening in his comeback year from TJ must have been a big factor.
