Gregg Olson: Orioles’ emphasis on talented, structured bullpens is nothing new - Baltimore Sun

“I’m a firm believer in people knowing what their jobs are and what they’re roles are,” Olson said, “and the times that I really struggled were times when I was in bullpens and I didn’t know when the phone rang that it was me. So, I wasn’t spending the 30 minutes before that preparing for who’s coming up, how I want to face them, what situations I’m walking into.

“My five years here, I knew what the situation was when the phone rang and I took off my coat.”

I can't help but think that if a pitcher is such a delicate flower that he can't go out and do what he does in any old inning, maybe he doesn't belong in a major league bullpen.

Rangers are a game-and-a-half ahead of Baltimore this morning while relying on a talentless, unstructured bullpen.

I wonder why they don't have a 7th inning pinch-hitter, an 8th inning pinch-hitter, a 9th inning pinch-hitter...I mean, how can a guy possibly be expected to go up to face some random pitcher cold?? The hitter must plot out who might be on the mound when he pinch-hits, go over strategy with the hitting coach, go to the cage to take some batting practice, choose just the right pair of batting gloves, etc. This is not child's play!!

I dunno maybe Olsen has a point. It does a little while longer to warm up to pitch then hit, no?
