Griffin Conine, Jeff’s son, banned 50 games for drug test

NEW YORK- Toronto outfielder Griffin Conine, a son of former major league outfielder Jeff Conine, has been suspended for the first 50 games of next season under the minor league drug program for a positive test for the banned stimulant ritalinic acid.

New York Yankees pitcher Daniel Marten was suspended for the first 25 games for a violation of the drug program; 25-game suspensions are assessed for use or possession of a syringe of an injectable substance, the commissioner’s office said Monday.

Griffin Conine, 21, was selected by the Blue Jays in the second round of last June’s amateur draft with the 52nd overall pick and signed for a bonus of $1.35 million.

They grow up so fast….

Wait, the Blue Jays’ top prospects are Vlad Guerrero’s son, Dante Bichette’s son, Craig Biggio’s son, and Jeff Conine’s son?

I saw Vlad and Biggio's offspring in the Arizona Fall League recently.

the bios in the program were amusing for relatives listings. one guy has a brother playing in the NBA, several have lesser-known ex-MLB dads, some had star-athlete moms, and I think one was related to ex-President James Polk.

it's not what you know - it's who you are related to.

I think they also have an eye out for Julio Franco's great, great, great grandson, but he might be too old at this point.

Well, Biggio and Conine aren't yetin the upper tier of Jays prospects - but Biggio is probably ahead of Dwight Smith Jr.

I hate when that Polk guy exploits his political connections to get stuff.

I would've gone whole hog. Why not name him Hippogriff Conine?

This explains why the Marlins 86'd him last year.

Well, Biggio and Conine aren't yetin the upper tier of Jays prospects - but Biggio is probably ahead of Dwight Smith Jr.

Biggio won Rookie and MVP award in AA. The Jays had him move to the OF for the AFL, which people have implied is because they want him to be a super-utility player. He's a bit older than Bo and Vladdy, so it might be his best bet to get to the big leagues at the same time as them.

Also, the Jays have Roger Clemens' son, Kacy, in their system.
He's probably not going to make it to the majors.

At one point in 2016, the sons of former MLB players Roger Clemens, Craig Biggio, Dante Bichette, Vlad Guerrero, Dwight Smith, and Steve Grilli were all in the Jays system.
