Guillen fuming after Sox’s 2-4 trip

A 2-4 trip seemed just as bad as an 0-6 trip to manager Ozzie Guillen after the Sox’s 3-2 loss Sunday at Kansas City in 10 innings.

“A very horse(bleep) road trip,” Guillen said after the Sox paid the price for their 1-for-10 effort with runners in scoring position. “Disappointing, my (bleeping) (rear). Disappointing for (bleeping) managers that have patience. Very bad road trip.

“The way it ended was the way we started - very bad. No excuse. I don’t give a (bleep) the way we lose, I don’t care the way we win, we didn’t get it done. This road trip was very important for us, and we played like (bleep).’‘

...Fueling Guillen’s anger was that the offense failed to produce on a day when closer Bobby Jenks equaled his career high with three (scoreless) innings to aid a bullpen that could possibly lose All-Star reliever Matt Thornton to the 15-day disabled list because of continued soreness in his left forearm.

“We had men on second base for like five times with two outs, and we didn’t get a hit,” Guillen said. “We’re supposed to not give into this guy (Jason Kendall). We give in, base hit to win the game. Very bad, very bad.”

That was a Gossage-style relief ace outing for Jenks. Come into a tie game in the 7th, pitch through the 9th. Too bad it didn't work.

Guillen, whatever else he may be, is one of the few managers of the modern era who would try something like that.

I've been listening to the Hawk whine about the umpires for decades but the extended rant at the end of the game Sunday was pretty bad. He apologized to Frank Thomas for the bad calls that stole the game from the Sox. Apparently he felt responsible and he may be right.

He then went onto the field looked up to the Heavens and bellowed, "God why do you hate the Sox?"

A deep voice rumbled from the Heavens, "Harrelson I don't hate the Sox, I hate you!"

Hey Ozzie, maybe if you wouldn't have so strongly desired a dh that can "play multiple positions" it would have been a 3 game split on the trip and the Sox would only be 3 back instead of 5.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but there were quite a few of us Sox fans calling for Ozzie's head over the DH thing when they were 9 under -- well it's still biting them in the ass. God bless Omar Vizquel for filling in well at 3B, but replace Kotsay's 300 or so PA with Thome and the Sox would have a couple more wins and teh Twin never would have gotten their grubby hands on him.

Adding on to my thoughts, I don't really think Ozzie is a bad manager or that he should be canned. I think he has strenghts (player management, pitcher use) that out way his weakness -- a desire for a team full of guys that play baseball like he played it.

That said, KW has got to get a better editorial grip on this stuff. If the Sox are going to rely on a roster full of veterans every year and never go for a full rebuild then they sure as hell can't be missing out on guys like Thome because Ozzie wants more "versatility" on the roster. A few more seasons around 80-88 wins instead of 90-95 and suddenly Williams' insistence on never rebuilding takes on a fool's errand type feel instead of "never say die".

As a fan whose team of choice will be lucky to clear 60 wins, the KC-White Sox series was pure bliss from a commentating standpoint.

Thome is ageless. My brother has always been a big Thome fan. He's convinced that Thome has 5+ years left being the LH platoon at DH. Seeing his production vs RHP even into his late 30s and some of the terrible DHs teams have rolled out this year, it's not far fetched.

The man was born to crush RHP, and look foolish vs LHP.

My hope is that Kenny appeased Ozzie this year, with the backup plan that if the offense faltered, he could say to Ozzie, "You had your way, and it didn't work; from now on, I give you the players, you put them in the right positions."
