Gwinnett Braves Announce Finalists for Team Renaming Constest

“The final six options are the Gwinnett Buttons, the Gwinnett Big Mouths, the Gwinnett Gobblers, Gwinnett Hush Puppies, Gwinnett Lambchops and the Gwinnett Sweet Teas.”

Those are some truly lousy choices for team name, save one.
There is only one real choice here: “Gwinnett Buttons”.
The name would honor Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence, and county namesake, Button Gwinnett.

And it won’t sound so strange when Lin-Manuel Miranda & Stephen Colbert bring their hit, one-song musical “Button!” to the Broadway stage: https://youtu.be/uhFeQSBZUSk

As a G-Braves fan, I've been super-dreading this story finding its way here. Have at it, fellers...

Gwinnett Buttons is a very good name. Gwinnett Hush Puppies is mediocre. The rest are awful.

Buttons & Hush Puppies are pretty decent.

I'm guessing Big Mouths references bass fishing. It may be okay, but don't like it as much as the first two.

Lambchops & Sweet Teas are awful. Admittedly if it was the town or county of Burnside, I could see Muttonchops as a great name.

Gwinnett Forthegippers. Then you use Ronald Reagan as your logo and collect all the money from the kind of people who want Reagan merchandise.

When I lived in Little Rock I used to hate fielding the question about the AA team, the Travelers. I even petitioned the GM to put on the back of the mascot a sign that said Robert E Lee's horse was named Traveller. The question then was what that had to do with Arkansas. The answer is nothing, the team was named for "Arkansas Traveler" which is a song, type of canoe, and a whole bunch of other stuff from Arkansas. Once they picked the name they coopted the horse.

Point being, cool historical nicknames are only cool to people who name teams.

I can't believe Neck Stabbers isn't a finalist.

Having spent virtually all of the first 42 years of my life in Arkansas, & a fair amount of that following the Travs, I must admit that any link to Robert E. Lee's horse utterly escaped me. The song was quite celebrated back in the 19th century, predating the horse. I've always liked the name; I'm "arktrav" on at least a couple of random message boards.

ETA: Also, you're not in Little Rock anymore?

In the fantasy league we used to run in the Democrat-Gazette newsroom, several of us were prone to coming up with team names based on Arkansas towns. I'm still partial to my own Hoxie Morons & Paron Theticals. Somebody else had the Helena Handbaskets.

More target-rich an environment for exactly that Gwinnett could not possibly be.

They probably don't even use a left fielder.

The joke growing up was that Gwinnett roads have two lanes...a right lane and a far-right lane.

If they go with Buttons, you could refer to a player as a button man... which is something, I guess.

In one of the old Spalding or Reach Guides from before WWI, the Little Rock Travelers "team photo" consisted of the manager carrying a giant suitcase with head shots of all the players enclosed within. The New Orleans team from that same era featured uniforms with large six pointed stars on the front of the jersey.

They will certainly and instantly be jeeringly known as The Butts.

Yeah, I got tired of working criminal defense and divorces as a solo practice, so when an opportunity popped up in the Miller/Lafayette county prosecutor office I jumped on it. I'll be back up in LR in a few years I imagine.

Lafayette County is where I grew up -- in Stamps.
