Hagen: Umps, keep an eye on Corpas

Corpas delicti?

Rockies closer Manny Corpas came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth, retired the Phillies in order and that was that.

Or was it?

TBS cameras on Corpas warming up before coming into yesterday’s 4-2 Colorado win in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park clearly showed the righthander pour a cup of water or soda on the front of his shirt before leaving the bullpen and then rubbing dirt on the area.

Then, when he went into the game, he appeared to go to that spot before several of his pitches in order to get a better grip on the baseball. Since the Rockies’ road jerseys are black, any discoloration on the shirt would have been difficult to detect.

Corpas delicti?

Bet he's never heard that one.

I saw him pour what I thought was water on his jersey at the time and even rewound the TIVO to do a virtual doubletake. I have to admit that I never considered sinister motives. I mean, if you were going to pour a liquid on your jersey in order to doctor baseballs, would you do it in plain sight?

I'm more concerned about how Jose Mota got the field commentator job on the Sox/Angels series.

There's either a snotty affirmative comment in this, or a really really obscene illegal immigrant comment.

King Kaufman notes the same thing in his Salon column today.

Would Sprite mixed with dirt be all that different from what the pitcher gets from a rosin bag?

Rosin is less refreshing.

I wouldn't have thought that shirts would be the leit motif of the NLDS, but yes, indeed.

There is a certain segment of Angels fans who hate him for his rolled, hispanic R's alone. I find him fairly mediocre, but then, he's on TV and so it's usually pretty obvious what's going on.

WRT King Kaufman's Corpas comments, the more useful link is this one.

So Hamels was ruined by all the moisture on his shirt, but Corpas was dominant because of all the moisture on his shirt?

It's no wonder I never made it as a big league pitcher.

Mark Grace has alluded to this as well re: Corpas.

So I read this column and came across this passage:

You could explain it away as a first-day mistake, but then that begs the argument that a network shouldn't be broadcasting the playoffs without having broadcast regular-season games. Work out the kinks in April and May, people. This might be spring training for TBS, but for the fans, it's the playoffs, and we expect playoff performances all around.

I know not everyone is a Braves fan but how is it possible to follow baseball and not know that TBS televises games during the regular season?
