Hallucinogenic Toreador: Gaddis: Six For The Hall

Imagine waiting all that time for a HOF vote…and then #### happens.

I’ve just marked my Hall of Fame ballot. I’ll fax it to BBWAA secretary/treasurer Jack O’Connell tomorrow. Of the 23 eligible players, I voted for six. Here they are:

Starting Pitcher Bert Blyleven
Outfielder Rickey Henderson
Starting Pitcher Tommy John
Outfielder Dale Murphy
Outfielder Jim Rice
Relief pitcher Lee Smith

For all I know, this might be the only time I have the privilege of voting. I’m glad I got to do it at least this once. I’ll fax the ballot, rather than mail it, because I want to keep it and show it to my sons and their children.

That's a pretty weird ballot..... (if nothing else, you'd think a guy with choices such as this would have voted for Dawson).

I think that if I was going to save a ballot to show my children, I'd try to make sure it wasn't a ridiculous ballot.

For instance, if one could save their first election ballot for posterity, one should make sure that they didn't write-in Gil Gerard for president or something.

So far, it looks like Henderson, Rice, and Blyleven are the only people with a chance, and it'll be close for Rice and Blyleven.

Ridiculous is in the eye of the beholder. Hallucinogenic Toreador sounds like a blog name that Brattain would use.

If Trammell and/or Raines fall of the ballot this year, I'm done with the HOF. It's a total joke.

Neither Trammell or Raines will fall off the ballot this year. People need to quit hyperventilating. The highest vote total EVER recorded by someone who went on to fell under 5% was Sparky Lyle at 13.1% Trammell has topped that in each of his seven years on the ballot and Raines received nearly double that last year.

Mo Vaughn being eligible for the Hall of Fame makes me feel very old.

That weird ballot also had votes for Trammell and Raines and not Rice and Morris, so it gets a pass from me. I'm not a fan of votes for non-HOFers, but the guy at least recognizes they're not HOFers.

Hodder doesn't have a HOF vote.

Weird? Ignoring the votes for Vaughn and Williams who are just token votes I think that's the best ballot I've seen.

I wonder if Szym would vote for Vaughan-Williams, if not Vaughn or Williams.

At least he voted for Murphy, if he's voting for Rice. There's literally no argument that could place Rice as a better player than Murphy, and they are similar players, in the sense that they were "best-in-baseball"-types for a couple of years and had other good years and fell off quickly. And he's voting for both Blyleven and John (not just John). I'd like to have seen Raines and probably Trammell, too, but at least this ballot has some consistency to it (although Dawson is a stronger candidate than Rice, too, and maybe Murphy).
