Breaking down the Haren deal with the good Rev.
The analysis adds four of the players acquired in the Haren trade as firmly entrenched in the Joakland Top Ten prospects. Many pundits have given Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez a Carlos Beltran ceiling, and author Kevin Goldstein (the John Sickels of subscriber shakedown baseball websites) slots him as the #2 prospect for the She-Wolffs, implying that there is more than just an outside chance that Gonzalez will be the opening day centerfielder under Mount Davis. He calls lefty Brett Anderson the best teenage pitching prospect in baseball. Position players Chris Carter and Aaron Cunningham are #5 and #7 prospects respectively in Goldstein’s very educated guesstimation.
This is NOT rebuilding. Billy Beane reloaded.
...The Dan Haren trade should give Angel fans the queasy tension that early season games against the Athletics are of double import - Billy Beane’s team cannot be allowed to sniff first place in midsummer. Complicating matters even more is the pathetic state of the Mariners and Rangers. Talk about the Green and Gold cakewalk - we all know that had the Mariners simply played .500 ball against Choakland in 2006 that the division crown would have comfortably rested in L.A. of Anaheim. With these two gelded inbred franchises being allowed on the field, there is no end to what the Connie Mack Attack can achieve in the A.L. West standings in 2008.
In other words, pop that bottle on New Year’s Eve for the new year, not October.

1. lincarnate Posted: December 17, 2007 at 12:50 AM (#2647488)in that excerpt alone we have: Choakland, the She-Wolffs, Joakland, and Connie Mack Attack
without any malice, i'll try to come up with a few more:
the Halfletics, Smokeland, the Smellephants, the Oakland A'ss, the Green and Mold, the Baked Beanes, the Gaffe-letics,
and for the 15-yr olds out there, the Oakland Gays
Oakland looks like they got quite a good haul for Haren, but for it to be "re-loading" doesn't the trade have to make Oakland competitive in 2008? I actually really like Aaron Cunningham and Chris Carter, but they're not doing anything for Oakland in 2008. And teenage pitching prospects are good, but don't do much for 2008.
I think he means to say that Oakland didn't just rebuild, but did a VERY GOOD job of rebuilding with this trade.
Unless I'm totally out to lunch on what "re-loading" means
Mat is playing devil's advocate here, methinks.
The Halos will handily win the division in 2008, but 2009 will be tougher - all things being equal.
2010 forward, those young A's will be making a big difference while the Halos are paying Hunter and Matthews a good haul to completely suck. Good trade for the A's in my opinion.
Also, I thought the nicknames were a little silly as well - the Connie Mack Attack? Seriously?
On the one hand, I'd expect the Rev to be going into a full blown HEY HEY, HEY HEY, THE CHOAKLAND GAYS DO SUCK TO-DAY mode, but he's not really doing that here.
Then again, all those stupid nicknames are present so he's still Revvin like he's always Revved.
Really, if I were an Angels fan, I'd be basking in the glow of the foregone 2008 AL West race right about now. I mean, maybe Seattle gives em a run. Or something. Possibly.
But really probably not.
Fortunately, we who are A's fans have a far more stinging perjorative for that other team: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Sorry, I know that hurts. I feel your pain.
Goldstein didn't actually say Anderson was the the best teenage pitching prospect. He said Anderson was the most polished teenager with the best chance of actually having a career.
