Hank Steinbrenner, in another outspoken moment, denounces Red Sox Nation

Here’s…The N.Y. Times Play magazine article.

Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees’ American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.

“Red Sox Nation?” What a bunch of [expletive] that is,” he said in an interview with The New York Times’ Play magazine. “That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

“Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”

...And Hal won’t admit the World Champion Red Sox now have the upper hand in the teams’ rivalry.

“No, I will never concede,” Hal says. “They’ve got a lot of talent, and [have] done very well the past few years, but let me put it this way: I don’t think [they] wanted to play us in the ALCS. So I will concede nothing. I think we’re better than [them].”

Go Hal, go! I've got 20 bucks says Hal ends this season in a bunker with a loaded gun, the sound of atillery firing in the distance...

Seriously, he is entertaining. I hope he never gets muzzled.

for the first time in my life as a red sox fan, a yankee owner is trying to discredit the red sox. where is all that yankee smug superiority? oh, that's right, it has defected and now has a new address.

I think this is actually pretty smart: cheap headline in the off-season, fuels the fire, and many baseball fans in America now see the Red Sox and Yankees as two sides of the same coin--correctly, IMO.

Hank's mouth is a detriment in many respects, but there is no real downside here.

Has there ever been a bigger mismatch than the Epstein/Steinbrenner duel?

Epstein owns the team now? Good for him.

Theo could school both of these clowns while brushing his teeth before breakfast with one had while wiping his ass with the other.

School him in what?

Baseball's not as complicated as football.

wait, isn't that true? baseball is a limited series of isolated events. football has MUCH more game theory / strategy involved.

You must mean Henry/Steinbrenner or Epstein/Cashman? Otherwise, it's a pretty stupid comment.

Why exactly is everyone so happy that Hank is a vociferous #########? Hank Steinbrenner is what you get if you take a typical 16 year old trash-talking jackass off an internet message board and give him free reign of the national media.

Because he sounds like a typical 16 year old trash-talking jackass off an internet message board and give him free reign of the national media.

Heck, 'bout time we got another Charlie O in the game. Things were getting too buttoned down and corporate in the ol' game. A little jackassery never killed anyone (unless they were incredibly stupid in which case three cheers for natural selection).

Let's get Lucchino in on this and fire up the ol' manure spreader.

Best Regards

Hankenstein, despite his idiotic bluster, is actually right. Red Sox Nation is a creation of ESPN, which is chock full of chowderheads. And, Yankees hats and jackets far outnumbers Red Sox gear, almost no matter where you go. Of course, that doesn't mean that many of those NY fans aren't of the bandwagon-juping variety.

The Red Sox are not "America's team". That's a myth.

Hank is full of hot air, but it doesn't mean he's ALWAYS wrong.

Yankee fans can laugh now, I don't know if they'll laugh when Hank sacks Cashman, replaces him with a flunky he can control and ends up hiring Howie Spira to tail A-Rod.

If "Red Sox Nation" wasn't anything more than a transparent marketing tool, it would be an embarrassment. As a Red Sox fan, I can easily detach myself from that nonsense and still enjoy the games.

Steinbrenner is doing his own marketing with his tantrum.

Ignore them all, I say.

Well, duh, and Stalin wasn't a Russian, which is equally true and equally beside the point. But both Generalissimos (Steinbrenner and Chiang) were exiled from their respective mainlands and are (were) reduced to firing verbal shots at their erstwhile underlings.

But of course the Yankees will return. The ghost of John Foster Dulles has guaranteed it.

Well, Idi Amin wound up in Saudi Arabia, but nobody mistook him for a Saudi Arabian.

And if there's one thing that Chiang Kai-Shek and Mao agreed on, it's that Taiwan was little more than an offshore province of China. I'm not sure that Wok would agree with that, but then he likely doesn't even control an army the size of Steinbrenner's.

"Red Sox Nation" is obviously one of the lamest things around.

"Red Sox Nation" is, however, not a claim to the popular superiority of the Red Sox. That is, it's a way of soaking money from Red Sox fans by piggybacking on the already-existing sense of fan unity with a bunch of bizarre gimmicks. It is not a statement that the US is a "Red Sox nation" or that the Red Sox are America's team or something. Hank Steinbrenner, in an awesome display of adolescent insecurity, has imagined "Red Sox Nation" as an affront to himself.

It's an affront to good taste. but not to the Yankees.
