Hardball Talk: Indians release Daisuke Matsuzaka

When you’re more washed up than Scott Kazmir…

Former Red Sox star pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka has been released from the Cleveland Indians, per the team’s official Twitter...

Since a brilliant 2008 in which the right-hander posted an 18-3 record with a 2.90 ERA, he has posted a 5.53 ERA. The Indians signed him to a Minor League deal on February 10. Despite posting a 2.25 ERA in ten spring innings, the Indians are choosing between Carlos Carrasco and Scott Kazmir for the fifth spot in the starting rotation.

Maybe he can land a job here.

Over and under on when he becomes a Yankee? 5 days?

If I had space on my AAA roster I'd sign him to a AAA deal but I doubt anyone would give him a ML job right now.

Funny thing is he pitched well in the ML camp - 4 games, 8 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO vs 9.6 quality (pretty much ML).

Kazmir was better - 13 IP 1 BB 13 SO 1 HR vs 9.2 quality (love that quality stat on B-R, very useful in spring to help know if a guy faced A'ers or ML'ers).

I suspect someone will offer DiceK a AAA job, but I'm sure he doesn't want to be riding buses.

He can go back to Japan and make billions of yen.

Doesn't matter. Springs stats are almost meaningless! GM's/Manager/Coaches/Scouts observations in practices, games, warmups, etc, etc, etc mean more than extremely small sample size results of games against players at various stages of their career who are working on different aspects of their game as much as worrying about results.

It would be really great if Kazmir made the rotation and had a good comeback

He should convert to a reliever as we know they are extremely valuable and help you win championships!

Rotoworld thinks that the Indians will sign him to a restructured minor league deal and send him to AAA as rotation depth.

The $100,000 roster bonus guarantee for veterans seems to be backfiring. They're all getting released. By my count Dice-K, Bill Hall, Mark Lowe, Endy, Ramon Ramirez, Freddy Garcia, Matt Diaz and Chris Snyder have been cut rather than sent down on their current contracts.

If nothing else its letting these guys decide if they want to go sign with a team where they feel they have a better shot at getting playing time, so I doubt anyone is really going to complain.
