Harper: Alderson should remember as Mets GM that New York is not Oakland when hiring a manager

As that old Greg Groovy and the Sewer Pilates song used to go…“My Shitty is Tougher Than Your Shitty!”

In New York, the manager matters more than most places. The scrutiny on every decision demands a certain type of personality, as does the magnitude of dealing with the media - as well as creating the right clubhouse culture.

...Bob Melvin would seem to be a more likely choice for someone like Alderson, who was one of the first to embrace the sabermetrics philosophy built around on-base percentage, plate discipline, patience and extreme intolerance for bunting.

Then again, Moneyball was a philosophy that went hand-in-hand with the steroids era. The game has gone back to being more about pitching, defense and manufacturing runs, while statistical analysis is now as in vogue as the cutter.

As one MLB executive said Thursday, “Sandy was at the forefront of the Moneyball stuff, but everybody has caught up. So I’m going to be curious to see how he adapts, especially in a big market. I’m really curious to see who he brings in to manage.”

Short-term v. long-term. As Harper points out, improving scouting, drafting, and player development is far more important than the managerial choice to the long-term success of the organization. But short-term, as far as buying public credibility and positive media spin, making a choice that will be accepted and get a good reaction is also a reasonably decent priority for Alderson. Ideally, he would be able to find a manager with the personality to appeal to the fan base -- somewhat combative or at least with a public face that seems to project an "I get New York and a take-no-prisoners" style -- but with a substantive approach to managing that is total in-line with what Alderson thinks a manager should do both on the field and in the clubhouse. There's a lot to be said for a manager in New York who is a strong, publicity-seeking face (helps get the players out of the spotlight when that's needed), but not one who is at war with or even in tension with the philosophy of the GM.

Back in the day, Sandy Alderson hired Tony LaRussa. He's not Billy Beane.

Did Alderson or Beane hire Art Howe? Not that it means anything, just curious.

I believe Alderson hired Howe, and Beane inherited him.

I believe Alderson hired Howe, and Beane inherited him.

And Howe had just gone through a rebuilding with the Astros, an undertaking the A's were about to start and the Howe hiring was almost universally lauded, and, despite Howe's faults, you can't argue he didn't get the A's to where they wanted to be. Howe gets way too much #### here for the caricature of him in Moneyball and because things didn't work out with the Mets.

Series has been great so far. I was rooting for Texas against the Yankees and SF against the Phils, now all in for the Giants b/c Texas should not get a ring.

On the Mets, they have a lot of speed on that team as it exists now. Doesn't really lend itself well to station-to-station baseball. And the speedy players are also good hitters, so no need to dump them.

In other words, what he's saying is -- YOU MUST PLEASE THE TABLOIDS! If you bring in a manager who does nothing for the back page, you are already behind the 8-ball as far as the media is concerned.

I've always liked Howe for his Olivier worthy dramatics when he got hit by that pitch. Not that he was faking or anything, but his reaction was like a silent film character being shot.

Well, OK -- but they are having the presser to announce our new GM today. It's kind of timely to talk about it, WS or not....

Awful sentence.

In a big market, you don't have to be smarter than everybody else. The resources of the Mets and not being stupider than everybody else should go a long way.

I think the Mets need a hard ass manager to deal with the press.

That's a stupid question, Harper! Get on your knees you scumbag! Now choke yourself.
####### it, with MY hand, numb-nuts!
Don't pull my ####### hand over there! I said choke yourself; now lean forward and choke yourself!
Are you through asking stupid questions?
########, I can't hear you!
########, I STILL can't hear you! Sound off like you've got a pair!
That's enough; get on your feet. You had best square your ass away and start shitting me Tiffany cufflinks or I will definitely #### you up!

Something like that.

For some reason, and I'm not entirely sure why, I have the feeling that he's going to hire Sandberg.

The snippet gives the impression that this is sort of an anti-sabermetrics piece but after reading the whole thing I think the argument is that sabermetrics should be emphasized in player development and acquisition at the GM level. In New York having a manager that would (for instance) be willing to hardly ever bunt or bat David Wright leadoff is less important than having someone good with the media and who capable of meshing strong personalities in the clubhouse.

I don't really disagree.

The tabloids do affect things, Manuel's crazy knife talk didn't do anyone any favors.
   19. Something Other Posted: October 30, 2010 at 09:26 AM (#3679809)
I imagine you need a manager with the skills Matt mentions in 19 along with a willingness to agree to do saberstuff in-game. I suppose if Alderson interviews Wally Backman he'd have to get a sense that Backman would indeed bunt only in a few, very specific situations, and not four times a game, or whenever he was hungover so that the crack of the bat didn't aggravate him. And promise not to bat Wright leadoff just because it would look stupid. Alderson did say recently that part of a manager's job is to fight with umpires from time to time in order to blow off the team's and the fans' collective steam. I thought that was interesting. So how do you put that one in an interview?
   20. AJM Posted: October 30, 2010 at 11:16 AM (#3679814)
As long as the manager doesn't bunt Reyes over in the first inning all the ####### time, he'll be an improvement.
   21. Lassus Posted: October 30, 2010 at 11:39 AM (#3679817)
Forget about bunting Reyes over, stop using Reyes to bunt other people over.
