Harper, Williams give thoughts on Nats’ lineup | Comcast SportsNet Washington

Managers love this kind of stuff.

Harper, in fact, reiterated that point on Monday. He said he found out Williams’ lineup on Twitter and respects his skipper’s decision to put him back in left. That said, he thinks the Nats’ best lineup is a little different than the one constructed on Monday.

“I’m in the lineup, that’s all that matters. If I had the lineup it would maybe not be the same. But he’s got the lineup card, he’s got the pen and he knows what he’s doing. There’s nothing I can do about it,” he said.

Harper explained that point further.

“I think [Zimmerman] is great and he should be playing left. Rendon’s a great third baseman and he should be playing third. And we got one of the best second basemen in the league in Danny Espinosa. Of course you want the best hitting lineup in there, and I think Rendon playing third and Zim playing left is something that is good for this team and I think that should be what’s happening.”

Pipe down kid; you do your job and let the manager do his. You're a member of a team; you're NOT the entire team, regardless of what Boras and the ad agency guys may have led you to believe.

OTOH, the Nats need to remember that Harper, not Matt Williams, is the future of the team and that public responses need to be muted. (Unless of course, they want him to test free agency and wave bye-bye to DC.)

[1] What if the horseshit manager is doing a bad job, though?

Doesn't really matter. Williams isn't going to allow Harper to dictate his decisions, and Harper isn't going to fire Williams, only Rizzo or the next GM is going to do that.

Even if you think Harper's opinion is partially or completely right, all he's accomplishing is pissing people off. As great as his potential may be, the truth is that his teammates don't respect him enough yet for him to be the self-appointed team captain.

I think we were too early with the "Maybe Bryce Harper really isn't the arrogant jackass that he was accused of being in the minors" thoughts after all.

So you agree that he'll look great in pinstripes/Anaheim Red/Dodger Blue?

So is it fair to infer that Harper isn't a fan of Denard Span?

i think he would have done fine if he had started and stopped at "But he’s got the lineup card, he’s got the pen and he knows what he’s doing."

Not sure if the problem is arrogance or naivete in thinking is OK to have an honest conversation with a reporter or a little bit of both. If its a good reporter and you let your guard down, the second part is not as hard to believe as it seems.

This wasn't a one on one with a single reporter. This was a full-on scrum with a group on his first day back. So he had to have known he was going to get these questions.

Barry Svrluga the one-time (always excellent) beat reporter has been dropping in and out doing features. He noted that he asked Zimmerman the same question two weeks ago and got the same answers as Bryce gave.

I think it's more that he really wants to be the permanent center fielder, for largely selfish reasons.

Well, 2 out of 3 aint bad.

Zimmerman made a fantastic play at third last night. Maybe if he gets some breaks he'll perform better

Selfish, as in putting his team in the best position to win the next game, the pennant, and the World Series.

He's no Fredi Gonzalez, thankfully.

I know I'm supposed to hate the guy, because he didn't give a cliche response and instead responded honestly. But I find it refreshing, even if I don't agree with him. Simply stated, unless you are a dinosaur, set lineups are a thing of the past, no team should be repeating the same lineup frequently and with the roster flexibility that the Nats have, I don't think that is going to be a problem going forward.

I don't think this is anywhere close to as cut and dried as you're making it to be.
