HBT (Gleeman): Korean star pitcher Ryu Hyun-Jin available for bidding

Bad news for MLB teams who might be thinking to sneak him under the radar:

Hyun-Jin, a 25-year-old left-hander who’s been one of the Korea Baseball Organization’s best pitchers since 2006, will be “posted” by the Hanwha Eagles and has already hired agent Scott Boras to represent him.

Apparently the posting process is different in Korea, and the posting club can reject all bids if they are dissatisfied with the payout. It will be interesting to see how this works out. I don't know a lot about this pitcher, but it doesn't seem like teams would want to pay him at an elite level.

I can't want until Toronto comes second in this process.

Can't Japanese teams do this too?

Are the Orioles excluded? I forget how far their persona non grata status in Korea extends.

The FA doesn't go into specifics about Mr. Ryu's talent level. "Can reach 93" on the gun isn't saying much. I used to think that having a Korean star would be great for the Mets walk-up attendance, but it never seemed to make much difference when Jae Soo was pitching. Flushing has a very large Korean-American population.

Apparently he is exempt from military service having earned an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008.

What's the estimate on his price range?

Yes, you are correct. I misread the article.

Ooh, another opportunity for Mark Walter/Stan Kasten to throw money around.
