Heyman is telling us Shane Victorino to the Dodgers is very likely. Dominic Brown has been called up.
   2. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:58 AM (#4197004)
Which should probably quash any hopes of a Soriano-to-LA trade.

THe really hilarious thing about Soriano being traded is I only relaly hear about it here. Is ANYONE actually courting the Cubs for him?

via MLBtraderumors:

Shane Victorino is returning to the organization that drafted him in 1999. The Dodgers acquired Victorino from the Phillies today for starting pitching prospect Ethan Martin and reliever Josh Lindblom, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (Twitter link).
   5. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 31, 2012 at 12:04 PM (#4197015)
There were rumblings about a possible trade to the Giants, but Soriano said he would not accept a trade there. That's probably for the best given the enormous outfield there.

No, it's 3pm (I'm not sure if that's Eastern or Central). I'm not sure why, seems odd to me.

Supposedly, there was a fair bit of smoke to the Giants being interested but Soriano vetoing the trade.

The LAD Soriano rumors were largely the Cubs essentially saying "If we can't get Lee or at least Webster, then you're taking Soriano, too".

Either way, the Cubs were almost certainly paying so much freight that it doesn't really matter... I can't imagine anything of vale was coming back from SFG.

Soriano's in kind of a different place employing his 10/5 rights than Dempster. If the Cubs pay a ton of freight - then there's a very real chance, a GOOD chance, that whomever takes him on just cuts him loose when the dead cat bounce is over with. Soriano still gets paid, of course, but I think he wants to play and wants the security that his big deal as paid solely by the Cubs afford him... They probably wouldn't seriously considering just eating it ALL until late next year, if that.

So long as he stays on the Cubs, he doesn't have to worry much about finding someone to play him every day. As soon as the Cubs just accept contractual sunk costs -- whomever acquires him has the luxury of being done with him pretty much whenever they please...

HA-ha, just kidding. I don't love it at all, not one little bit.
   25. zonk Posted: July 31, 2012 at 12:49 PM (#4197091)
Cubs are calling up Cardenas... With Castillo already up, Jackson supposedly in limbo (apparently, he's back in the Des Moines lineup today), and Coleman coming -- I'm speculating that LaHair is being tossed in with Dempster to sweeten the pot. That better put the deal in Lee territory if not Lee+more territory.
   26. Spahn Insane Posted: July 31, 2012 at 12:49 PM (#4197092)
If the Dodgers *aren't* after LaHair, they ought to be.

Dan Duquette has a long history of being (generously speaking) a poor communicator with his fellow GMs. Plus Peter Angelos has to sign off on any deal.

As a general thing, I don't understand the general qualms that are reported about remaining salary when mid-season trades are discussed. You read things like 'an obstacle in a Pence deal is his estimated $12 million salary for 2013' which don't make any sense to me because almost every team in the league would take Pence on a one-year deal next off-season at that price. Teams give multi-year deals at 7 figures per to the Werths and Cuddyers every year but lesser salary commitments are reported as if they are cyanide if the acquisition is in the midseason.

Looks like the Dodgers are going all in this year.
So far, though, they appear to be going all-in while retaining all of their top 10 prospects. That's a pretty nice feat.

Of course, it was enabled by Ned Coletti's utterly awful offseason, in which he decided not to acquire anyone who had the ability to hit baseballs. The gaping holes in the lineup made it easy for Coletti to improve the team by adding some expiring contract mediocrities on the cheap.

That streak will end whenever the Dempster thing gets done... I mean - OK, so we won't get Lee or Webster, but no way Thed just lets them have Dempster without at least some lotto stuff like Silverio or whatnot. I'm not certain anything outside of Lee is going to be all that much better than a sandwich pick, so if the Dodgers won't do a couple of top 10ers outside of Lee/Webster... well... best of luck.

   55. zonk Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:32 PM (#4197165)
Not sure what the Phillies want with Schierholtz - if they're cashing in their chips, seems like they'd be best served letting Brown, etc play. Still, I suppose Schierholtz can probably make it through waivers so perhaps his stay in Phillie would be short.

There's mounting evidence that the Giants were willing to take on Soriano, but Soriano nixed the deal. I assume SFG fans will be getting together to get Fonsie something nice for Xmas this year.
   56. Dan Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:34 PM (#4197170)

Buster Olney is tweeting about the Cubs making a move for Upton, but he appears to be pulling it out of his ass, based only on a report that the DBacks are attempting "something big."

Getting Upton would pretty much by definition be a F*****' A trade for the Cubs.

I'm guessing it's so deals aren't being completed during games resulting in all manner of bizarre substitutions or guys simply taking the day off as a "just in case" thing. You get a 5-6 player deal and things could get kind of crazy if it was completed in the 4th inning.

Calling back a ways, but Soriano's "dead cat bounce" is going on 3 months of a 900+ OPS. I don't expect him to continue that going forward, but the switch to a lighter bat has made a huge difference. You don't give him away for lottery tickets.

Sure you do. Because even if you don't expect Soriano to be a .900+ OPS player, then there's an excellent chance you can get more value for the $36 million he's owed in 2013 and '14. These deals don't exist in a vacuum.

You do if he's making 18 mil for the next two seasons.

Even with odds, I don't think anyone on the planet would take the 'over' on that bet next year, or maybe even the remainder of this year.

I don't know that I'd have eaten a lot of contract to get say... Nate Schierholtz in exchange, but for one of the toolsy left-behinds like charlie jones (or is it taylor? I always get the guy on the A's with a similar name confused) I would.

Anyone know anything about Rosin? He's a 23-year-old in A+ (so, old for the league I guess) who's striking out almost 11 per 9. I assume he's a lottery ticket type in this deal, Schierholtz is just there to eat up some innings in the outfield, and Tommy Joseph is the centerpiece.

I don't think the White Sox will be making any moves today. Another starting pitcher would be nice, as the league seems to be finding out about Quintana, Humber & Floyd have been up & down, Sale's being stretched, and Liriano's kind of a wild card.

Some sort of middle infielder would be nice too as Ray Olmedo is currently the Sox utility man.

The Cubs are currently scheduled to pay Soriano $38M of the $38M he's owed. Is this a rumor of what they're offering to cover of his salary if they can return prospects? And in that case, I figure how "absurd" it is would depend on the prospects you get back.

I agree with this, and it's interesting to note how MLB Trade Rumors has grown over the years, going from a shady, fairly untrustworthy and disreputable font of BS speculation to, at this point, a very reliable clearinghouse for trade rumors that collects the reporting of others (whilst clearly sourcing it) as well as getting a few tips of its own. It's like Deadspin in reverse.

So Ray Olmedo is still alive. I think White Sox fans have to be ecstatic with the haul they've taken in trades this year considering the condition of their farm system.

The Cubs are currently scheduled to pay Soriano $38M of the $38M he's owed. Is this a rumor of what they're offering to cover of his salary if they can return prospects? And in that case, I figure how "absurd" it is would depend on the prospects you get back.

Right. Is there some rumor I should know about?

Yes, it's an open secret that the Cubs will pay the freight in any trades to get a better return. Soriano specifically has been rumored anywhere from paying 90% to all but 2M. He switched to a lighter bat on May 13th, and since then has put up a .284/.341/.597, while being rated out as above average to great in the defensive metrics.

And teams want to give up a live arm A baller for him.

Dempster/LAD now reported to be at an impasse; Cubs now looking elsewhere and ARE in touch with the Yankees. 90 minutes to go... gotta think this is where mistakes get made!

Now the rumors are that the Yankees are trying to slip in at the last minute to grab Dempster. Given their history, he'll probably cost DeWayne Wise and a signed photo of Sam Militello.

According to Phillies Facebook page, OF Nate Schierholtz, C Tommy Joseph and RHP Seth Rosin from Giants for OF Hunter Pence is official.

The Reds are apparently after Span...

And I don't see the Yankees getting Dempster any more cheaply than the Dodgers - if Dempster wankered us out of a legit prospect, then nothing we can do but just take the comp pick.

Jays and Rangers still thinking Garza - apparently, they had scouts in town to watch his side session.

As crazy as it would have sounded a year ago, Soriano might be the most under-rated player in baseball right now. He's getting paid so it doesn't matter to him, but he's doing all the great things that SSR just mentioned, and he's hustling and doing all the "grindy" things that fans like. Menawhile most of the league seems to think that he's minutes away from a nursing home. Soriano for the next 2.5 years at about $1M/year (Cubs would pay the rest for the right package) could be the best pick-up of this summer.

And there's no hurry on him. He's the most likely player in baseball history to pass through waivers.

I am. Well, especially with the Youkilis deal. Youk is hitting .255/.375/.462 with very solid defense since coming to Chicago. He replaced Brent Morel (14 OPS+) & Orlando Hudson (40 OPS+). That's a hell of an upgrade, and all they had to give up was Lillibridge & Zach Stewart.

The other 2 deals are fine. Like I said, Liriano's kind of a wild card- he's pitched well over his last 6 starts or so, and Cooper does well with projects like this, but it's difficult to discount 2+ seasons of suck.

Kenny does a really good job of dealing mediocre prospects to get back decent MLB talent, while at the same time finding guys in the Sox system to fix small holes in the major league roster (de Aza in center, Nate Jones in the pen, Quintana in the rotation).

Well the Reds are interested. Is there something I should know about why you want rid of him?
