Henry, Yankees Catch Break as Soccer, Baseball Ban Video Replay

The left hand of Thierry Henry and the left-field foul line at Yankee Stadium have something in common: No instant replay.

France reached soccer’s World Cup finals on an overtime goal against Ireland that was set up by what replays showed was a ball illegally directed by Henry’s left hand onto the path of teammate William Gallas.

A month earlier and 3,500 miles (5,600 kilometers) to the west, the New York Yankees won a first-round game in Major League Baseball’s playoffs with help from a final-inning call on a fly ball down the left-field line by Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins that was called foul.

Video replays led even the umpire who called it, Phil Cuzzi, to say that the ruling should have been fair. The Yankees won 4-3 in the bottom of the 11th on their way to claiming a record-extending 27th World Series title.

Each case brought cries for the use of video replay to help determine the correct call. Both sports’ leaders said, ‘No.’

“Until I am no longer president, there will be no chance” for replays, said Sepp Blatter, the head of soccer’s governing body FIFA, which said yesterday that the France-Ireland result stood.

#### the Yankees. #### France.

We now have two threads. It's a disaster.

I'm particularly upset that my Shaqiri song may now be lost to posterity.

Oh dear. Pepe Reina slips while going to clear a back pass and Tevez beats him to the loose ball and clips it into the empty net. 3-0.

This one will be closed soon enough, so I suggest everyone move over to the New Thread

Fear not, it is all stupidity on my part and zero censorship. The new thread should be up shortly.

Quite a 1st day to have Fox Soccer Channel. That was a fantastic game to watch. That Bale fellow is a hell of a player.

That was incredible. They looked good in the second half even without VDV. When Sandro can take Jenas' place more regularly, the team should be even stronger. Now if they can just carry this form over into the league...

Copenhagen drew with Barca, too. They look likely to make it to the KO stage.

VDV on the Bale - Maicon match up: "He shreded him."
11113. Francoeur Sans Gages (AlouGoodbye) Posted: November 02, 2010 at 11:06 PM (#3682791)
Yeah Bale was awesome. Maybe Benitez should stop going on about bottles of milk and sugar mountains, and coach his team?

Barcelona were lucky to draw. Valdes should have been sent off in the first half, he did a UFC-style flying knee to the head of a Copenhagen attacker.

I vote we keep this thread. I am fed up with switching to new threads and so on while the basketball thread goes on unabated. We have kept this civil, on-topic and alive for a year now. I see no reason to change.

Agree.

Meanwhile, did anyone see the Werder Bremen debacle? That team pisses me off, and this after falling in love during the Sampdoria game that got them in the group stage and all. Now there's a team that can't handle playing both league and Europe.

I vote we keep this thread.

I don't really care about having new threads, though there is something enjoyable about coming back to this thread and remembering how many of the 100+ pages of it I've posted on, and all the great games it's covered. But if there's some reason it's better for the site to break things up into smaller threads, I'm okay with it.

That said, it does gall a bit that there is this significant effort to get us to make new threads all the time while the basketball one continues on. Has there ever been an explanation of this?

The only thing I can think of is that a few people have complained about this thread among the regular primates, probably because they dislike soccer. It's just another reason to keep this going in my book.

Anyway, a couple of questions:

Why can't continental teams handle Bale? I mean, he's good in the EPL but he doesn't scorch teams like he does against European opponents.

Has anyone ever studied whether it's better for the keeper to throw the ball to a back and build up play from teh back or if it's better for the keeper to just kick the ball forward where you ahve about a 50-50 chance of retaining posession in the opponent's half? Is the more dangerous starting position worth the increased loss of posession?

The only thing I can think of is familiarity. I think we've discussed re: Crouch (who, and granting this isn't apples-to-apples, has 23 goals in 47 European games compared to 92 in 340 League games) but at least with Crouch there is a "logical" explanation, teams are flummoxed by his height. There's nothing about Bale that stands out.

Surely it depends on your general approach to the game, no?

I know Bale has done it against other teams, but I think the bigger question from yesterday is whether Maicon is toast (either temporary toast or long-lasting permanent toast), especially on the defensive side. He has looked doughy and only occasionally interested throughout Serie A this season.
11121. Francoeur Sans Gages (AlouGoodbye) Posted: November 03, 2010 at 12:34 PM (#3682955)
CWS - I am indeed a Giants fan, thanks.

As for Bale, we're talking a pretty tiny sample size, no? Is it that continental teams can't handle Bale, or is it that he's had a few good games in the Champions League this season?

Obviously it's SSS, but he's run right past the backs he's faced against European teams while EPL teams slow him down and, in some cases, stop him cold. The RB for Twente was helpless against Bale, too and I haven't seen him do that to an English team yet, even the shitty ones. I mean, he's had great games in England, but he hasn't humiliated anyone, either. I just find it odd.
11123. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: November 03, 2010 at 01:05 PM (#3682970)
I don't watch a lot of the continental teams (FSC mostly focuses on EPL with some Serie A) but it seems that the EPL teams largely play the same style. Come charging down the win then look for a cross in. When I see the other European teams they seem to be more centrally oriented, trying to work the ball up the middle rather than focusing on the wings.

Because of this it may be that the English teams are simply better equipped both in skill and tactics to deal with an onrushing winger where the European teams have focused their defensive strategies on protecting the middle and pushing people outside.

IN other words, styles make the fight.
   11124. Mattbert Posted: November 03, 2010 at 01:06 PM (#3682971)
I think the difference with Bale has been down to the European teams (a) not being willing to sic two or even three players on him when he has the ball and/or (b) not having a fullback who can match him for pace.

Everton contained Bale by having Neville play very deep and pushing Coleman and Heitinga over to help out whenever possible. It helped that Neville gave an excellent individual performance as well. United contained Bale by sticking Rafael on him, who is pretty darned quick himself, so Bale wasn't able to just bull rush his way around and past the defender.

Inter don't have any defenders with the legs to keep up with Bale, especially deep into the game. His stamina is just as dangerous as his pace, really. He's got the engine to be going full pelt even after 70-80 minutes of getting up and down that left flank like a greyhound. It could be that the English fullbacks he's up against are somewhat fitter than their European counterparts and so Bale isn't able to leave them for dead in the last 15-20 minutes of a match.

Also, and then I'll shut up about yesterday's awesomeness, it's nice having Luka back!

Just about any other game, and his would've been a MotM worthy performance. He was awesome like a ninja. Bale was like an atom bomb.

EDIT: Setting aside the praise for a moment, I think it is important to recognize that Maicon did indeed look a little sluggish, as frannyzoo noted. Bale was sensational, but we shouldn't get too carried away. Inter as a unit were pretty poor (hardly any pressing from them when they were chasing the game, which I found staggering) and were also missing their main shutdown trio in midfield: Cambiasso, Stankovic, and Thiago Motta.

Glad tidings to Alou as well on the San Francisco Baseball Giants' championship season.

11129. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: November 03, 2010 at 04:15 PM (#3683109)
It is believed Comolli was recommended to new owner John W. Henry by Billy Beane – a close friend of Comolli’s and a man whom Henry attempted to hire as general manager of the Boston Red Sox. Beane is general manager at a baseball side in the US and revolutionised the way players were recruited.

Fantastic!
   11130. Mattbert Posted: November 03, 2010 at 07:08 PM (#3683249)
So it would seem Henry feels more comfortable with the continental model. Perhaps not too surprising since it's more similar to baseball management structure than the traditional English manager model.

I would take this to suggest Woy's days are numbered.

Man City has now played 13 games and scored 15 goals. How soon until Mancini gets sacked? To be a little bit fair to him, they did control the game and it's not like it's entirely his fault that all his attacking players weren't able to do much with a ton of possession in the final third.

Three 0-0 draws out of 7 games this morning in England, BTW. Not a great showing for the Most Exciting League in the World (TM).

Goal for Stuart Holden, too. His first for Bolton, I think?

Talk about a dreadful half of soccer between Stoke and Liverpool. Ugh.
   11134. Baldrick Posted: November 13, 2010 at 07:37 PM (#3689428)
I didn't think it was that bad. Not scintillating or anything, but there were a few nice stretches.

I do have a much higher tolerance for defenses which sit back and absorb, I suppose. But even accounting for that there was a decent amount of excitement, I thought.

I don't really get what all the fuss is about on the supposed penalty in the opening couple minutes. If that's a penalty then there are 20 penalties every game. Which, to be fair, might technically be true.
   11135. Baldrick Posted: November 13, 2010 at 07:38 PM (#3689431)
Also: very aggravated that I can't find a feed of Reading-Norwich. Was excited to actually get a chance to see the Royals for once. Though, I guess we're down 3-1 so maybe it's for the best I'm missing it.

It's kind of funny that this thread remains intact, while the November one and, IIRC, another one a few months back have been zapped.

Samir Nasri's goals this weekend were fantastic. I was in France (Strasbourg) when he signed with Arsenal. I couldn't tell whether it was really a big deal or not, but he did make the news that night. Does he get much play for France's national team?
   11140. Mattbert Posted: December 06, 2010 at 01:20 AM (#3703501)
Nasri's been seeing more time for Les Bleus since the World Cup debacle and subsequent bans forced France to start bringing more of the next generation into the national setup. Being in the form of his life hasn't hurt.
11141. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: December 06, 2010 at 01:38 AM (#3703517)
I think Domenech being given the boot has more to do with it then the bans.

Bobby Robson of course. Only a legend will do. (Though they may be saving him for a time of great peril.)

Good win tonight. The defence is still shaky though, and Andy Gray was hilariously dead-on when he showed how lucky Lanky Kanye's goal really was. But any performance like that is encouraging. Positive goal difference, hoorah!

Oh, most definitely. In my mind, his departure was rolled up in the "World Cup debacle". Which was, admittedly, probably not all that clear to people other than me.
