Here’s hoping there’s more roster moves to come from Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto | The Seattle Times

Maybe for regular fans, not to us. (And that’s not the royal we.)

That’s the optimistic way to look at the additions of outfielder Jarrod Dyson and pitcher Yovani Gallardo, on top of the offseason acquisitions of infielder/outfielder Danny Valencia, left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski, catcher Carlos Ruiz, outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-handed starters Rob Whalen and Max Povse.

Nothing too sexy — some of those names might not even ring a bell — but, at least theoretically, they’ve added depth, maneuverability, athleticism, speed and potential, all elements that are important parts of Dipoto’s vision for making the Mariners a sustainable contender.

And they just traded my favorite pitching prospect.

Seattle gets Mallex Smith and Shae Simmons from Atlanta for Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.

Mallex Smith and Jarrod Dyson would seem to have greater utility on a team without Leonys Martin established in CF.

Smith was only with them for a few hours.

"Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for outfielder Mallex Smith, infielder Carlos Vargas and left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough."

...and Mallex Smith was a Mariner for all of about five minutes. He, plus Ryan Yarbrough and Carlos Vargas head to Tampa for Drew Smyly.

I like Mallex Smith, and I think the Braves might have just downgraded in overall talent, but he's not displacing Inciarte from center, and he most definitely does not have the bat to play in a corner.

Edit: fizzy beverage to vortex

If the Braves decided that Mallex is who he was last year, then they can sign any defensively minded backup CFer and they basically just bought a solid LHP prospect for whatever the price of that player is. While it's true that Mallex had the benefit of control, I don't know that he would've had much utility to the team in 2-3 years if he was never going to take a step forward.

Good trade for ATL.

I love the hell out of Gohara--I think he'll be a beast.

If they never make a roster move again, the current guys are all going to be pushing 40 before you know it. That's not a competitive plan.
