‘He’s a legend’: Left off ALDS roster, Yankees fighting to make sure CC Sabathia gets another shot

NEW YORK — CC Sabathia dressed quietly in the corner of the Yankees clubhouse Thursday, alone with his thoughts, wondering, praying, whether he has thrown his last professional pitch.

The Yankees open the postseason Friday in the American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins, but while Sabathia is the heart and soul of this proud franchise, he will be relegated to be a cheerleader in the dugout.

Sabathia is not on the Yankees’ Division Series roster.

And with no guarantee the Yankees will beat the Twins, let alone whether he’ll be on the roster in the next round or potentially the World Series, Sabathia’s career may have ended a few weeks earlier than he envisioned.

That would be quite a way for a career to end, wouldn’t it?

He's the heart and soul of the franchise? Really? The guy drank himself into being ineffective and could drop 50 pounds without anyone noticing.

No, not at all. He may have been the heart and soul of a couple of specific team iterations (I'm skeptical), but the franchise? Not even close.

The intro is a bit over the top but I don't think the prior alcoholism or his weight have anything to do with it. Sabathia seems well-liked and a good clubhouse guy but he's just not that effective anymore at 38.

The Yankees have had a few heavyset drinkers who were still pretty major contributors in their day.

I spent over a decade irrationally disliking Sabathia, but as more stories have come out about him, he seems like a genuinely great guy to have in the clubhouse. I absolutely believe that his teammates care a great deal about giving him a good sendoff.

Even at the height of my irrational dislike of Sabathia, I would have found Post #1 in this thread to be in exceptionally poor taste.

CC has had a great career. Like Baldrick I have never been his biggest fan but I will happily admit that was based on nothing meaningful he just grated. But like Baldrick I will admit every story about him makes him sound like a great teammate.

My question would be, HTF did Tyler Lyons make the ALDS roster over CC?

If I'm going to take a marginally effective lefty, I think I'm going with the big guy.

Meanwhile, Randy Dobnak has made the Twins’ postseason roster. In July 2017 he was playing for the Utica Unicorns, of the United Shore Professional Baseball League.

CC's platoon splits, both for this year as well as career, would argue for a loogy role at least.

Sabathia’s left shoulder is now a problem, along with the balky knee that has long troubled him. Reportedly, CC had a cortisone shot, but didn’t get any improvement. The Yankees would probably be happy to add C. C. to the roster for later playoff rounds, but it doesn’t seem likely that his condition will improve sufficiently.

Yeah, it wasn't ability, he's just injured.

The guy drank himself into being ineffective

Go #### yourself, man.

And no, not heart and soul of the entire franchise by any stretch. Clearly well-loved by the team and the sport.

Another perfect example of how the anonymity of .the internet provides an outlet for people with low self esteem to lash out at people who have actually accomplished something.

Having witnessed it firsthand, Sabathia was undoubtedly the heart and soul of the 2008 Brewers.

He is a redass who probably overreacts to certain things which make him seem like a prick to opponents. his teammates love him and he seems to be a genuinely great guy off the field.

In 2009, Francisco Cervelli was a rookie with 100 PAs. Sabathia felt so strongly about voting him a full postseason share that he was going to give his own share to Cervelli, until his teammates agreeed.

For one thing, calling CC "the heart and soul of this proud franchise" seems like a load of crap.

And for another thing, this was written by a well-known idiot of a baseball writer.

So I heartily endorse anybody who says this article is a load of crap.

Getting personal about Sabathia, though, is a bridge too far.
