Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that ball in your hand?

An in-depth look at Joe Blanton’s struggles this season and what has changed from his solid 2007 campaign. Opponents have been crushing Blanton’s balls (pun intended) much more this year than last.

I like Cupcakes, but I'm hoping he's dealt for an outfield bat or some middle if/catcher prospect soon. I'd be perfectly happy with Gaudin back in the rotation.

It sounds like he's not that different from before, and a pitcher that averages 6.44 IP/Start with a FIP of 4.28 is pretty valuable. Is that FIP helped by the McAfee park factor?

Moreover if his value's dropped since the offseason, when Beane couldn't get anyone to satisfy him, why trade him now? Why not trade Harden or Duchscherer, whose values must have jumped since the offseason, if they trade anyone?

Blanton is valuable, but I'd rather roll the dice on Duke's and Harden's upside and I think Gaudin can fill in capably for Blanton. With the Yanks and now possibly the Dodgers scrambling for pitching, and other contenders looking to upgrade for the stretch, I think now's the time to move him.

Yes as much as I hate to say it... trade Harden NOW, quick.

Blanton's last start was painful to watch. I was optimistic that he was going to come out and kick ass, after pitching really well but still losing to the Yankees last time out. Just when it looked like he was going to get out of the first inning with only the 2 runs allowed, he missed location badly with that curve ball to Chris Young and gave up the 3-run homer. Haren hit a pretty decent pitch for the 3-run double, I thought... but damn that hurt. I hope Haren took him to a really nice restaurant.

Blanton looked good v. the Yankees, who have hit around Oswalt and Peavy in the week since facing him.

They also got mostly shut down by the immortal Josh Banks. And the similarly immortal Shawn Chacon.
