Heyman: Boras Disputes Chipper Jones’ Story About Their Meeting

Another good read.

Jones was a great player, but he didn’t prioritize top dollar or even fair value at the start, and just wanted to stay in Atlanta (though another Hall of Fame Boras client, Greg Maddux, got his wish to stay in Atlanta a long time, as well — though not quite forever). We’ll never know if Jones recalled the story of meeting Boras precisely, but judging by how he handled things later, the conclusion that they weren’t a perfect fit for each other was probably right on.

Chipper tells another anecdote in his book, the one about when he did sign his first pro deal before hiring an adviser or agent. In his story he relates agreeing to a $275,000 deal with the Braves at an Olive Garden a day before the Braves would take him No. 1 overall (he was almost a decade away from hiring Abbott).

About that pre-draft deal, Boras said, “Free salad … and free talent. The Braves love it. That meal cost (Jones) $975,000.”

I can understand Chipper didn't want to play hardball, and not liking Boras, but when top talent was already getting over $1M from teams, thats a hellofa discount to give as the #1 pick.

So the Stephen Strasburg of the time Ben McDonald got $350,000 the year before.

He was selected by the Orioles in June and signed on Aug. 19, getting a $350,000 bonus — breaking the record of $230,000 — and a guaranteed salary of $950,000, which included incentives to push the package to $1.1 million.

According to USA Today.

I'd guess Chipper could have gotten more but the meal didn't cost him $975,000 unless you count guaranteed salary. Sounds like Boras was just talking up his brand in anticipation of the next draft.

The article points to Andruw as staying with Atlanta, but from my memory of the events, when it happened, basically Andruw and his dad negotiated with the Braves, got the deal they wanted, and then called Boras up to more or less finalize it.

Well, if Chipper can own up to his marital indiscretions, plus the story in this link, then I will believe Chipper over Boras.

Seems muchado about nothing. For most top draft picks, Boras' strategy--push as hard as possible for the highest bonus possible, because it might be the kid's only shot at making money in professional baseball--is appropriate.

In Jones' case, he put a lot of value of being a Brave and didn't want to risk being skipped because of signability concerns.

$1.1M guaranteed sounds like a lot more than $475k guaranteed Chipper got.

Chipper Jones is a better human being than Scott Boras.
