Heyman: Clemens is just a sideshow, Astros’ ongoing, unprecedented overhaul is the real story

HT to Craig Calcaterra, who commented on this portion of this article:

Months after Luhnow tried to lure Keith Law from ESPN and hired Mike Fast from Baseball Prospectus, the new name being heard is Kevin Goldstein, also from Baseball Prospectus. (Luhnow called Goldstein “very well thought-of” while declining to say whether he’s joining the Astros; Goldstein, known for extensive prospect reviews and clever, sometimes sassy tweets, responded “no comment” via a direct message on Twitter.)

“We want people who are going to share our vision,” Luhnow said. “It doesn’t necessarily need to be a traditional-looking person. We’re going to be open-minded.”

Maybe Heyman wants a job.

It's only a matter of time before they run out of the saber-bloggers and start coming after us.

Red Sox hire the Raybot! Rangers hire BBC! Diamondbacks hire Repoz!

And if there really is a god, the White Sox will hire Keefe.

When are the Cubs hiring Colin?

The Cubs couldn't possibly pay Colin enough.

The Astros are headed to their second straight 100+ loss season (and 110 is doable) and the future looks every bit as bleak. I would think a radical change to what they have been trying in recent years would be considered a good thing. If I were an Astro fan I think I'd prefer this to "we have a lot of confidence in our process and we're going to stay the course."

We'll know if they start augmenting the current "Stars of 2007" team with the Stars of 1917. Fred Ludicrous, Honest Wagner, Zack Weed, Pol Pot, Howard Empty, Amos Drunk, Karl Maze, George Sizzler, Stank Ovaleskey, Hi Negro, Joe Oeschger, etc.

I'm guessing the Orioles go after karlmagnus.

What they've been doing in recent years is getting rid of anyone who is even remotely good. So yeah, if they stop doing that, the team will improve.

In 1917 Hi Negro was on the Cincinnati Bolsheviks along with Larry Cough, Douche Rooter, Jim Earring, and Grecian Eel.

I've been hired by the Braves as official team occultist. My job is to travel back into the 1800s and generate a steam-powered magical summoning of dark spirits which will then port us forward in time and make Tommy Hanson cease to suck.

It will be awesome.

FWIW, Kevin Goldstein has in fact been hired by the Astros as Coordinator of Pro Scouting. Anyone who knows Kevin at all knows that he deserves this opportunity, and I'm very glad for him. I'm also glad that the Astros are moving to the AL West so that the Pirates don't have to contend directly with him :)

WRT bloggers and writers being hired by teams - the ones who are getting hired, like Kevin and Mike Fast, are getting hired not solely (or even primarily) because of their blogging, but because they have demonstrated, in part through their writings, that they have a set of skills that teams can utilize. Craig put his finger right on it in the comments section of his piece:

This is not false modestly when I say it: I really have no skills that a baseball team would be interested in hiring me for. I don’t have any scouting expertise. I don’t do statistical or performance analysis. I don’t have experience in the game.
