High School Baseball Game In Japan Takes 50 Innings, Four Days

Chukyo finally defeated Sotoku 3-0 in the 50th Sunday morning, but look at those pitching lines. Both starting pitchers played the entire game. Taiga Matsui hurled 709 pitches for Chukyo, and Sotoku’s Jukiya Ishioka threw 689 pitches.

Matsui threw 77 more pitches in relief the next game. The likening of Japanese high school coaches to child abusers has another data point. It’s too bad, because a 50 inning game should be freakin’ awesome, and instead I’m just wondering if these two kids damaged their arms for the rest of their lives because their coaches are psychotic.

I would've loved to have seen the 49th inning stretch!

Oh, and that final was on the same day this game finished. So he threw 786 pitches in four days (and 55.1 IP). Yeesh.

They don't give any K or BB totals, but the winning pitcher has a game score of 246 without them.

"Rubber ball" tournament? Does that make the 700 pitches over 4 days slightly less crazy?

Matsui and Ishioka make Oeschger and Cadore look like wimps.

Only somewhat (because 50 is insane no matter what level or ball you are using). A rubber ball doesn't fly as much through the air, for example.

The longest pro game, according to wikipedia, is that 33 inning game in AAA in 1981 (Pawtucket vs Rochester). Bob Ojeda got the win in just 1 inning of relief. Just 6 pitchers for Rochester (two went 8 innings each, another 10, before the final 2 didn't get an out) 8 pitchers for Pawtucket. Cal Ripken and Wade Boggs were both in the game as well.

Could've sworn there was a game that hit the 40's in Japan at some point but cannot find it.

edit: Found it - it was in Japan - 45 innings in 1983.
