HOME RUN DERBY (AND CELEBRITY SOFTBALL) OMNICHATTER

It’s All-Star Break time! First up: The Home Run Derby, after that, a taped airing of the Celebrity/Legends Softball game. And that means that it’s time for a HOME RUN DERBY OMNICHATTER, where you can chat and/or complain about the event to your heart’s content.

Now, to paraphrase Mark McGwire, do you want to think about horrible truths, or do you want to see people sock some dingers?!?!?!

The only Home Run Derby that I attended was in 1993 at Oriole Park. I saw Ken Griffey, Jr. hit the B&O warehouse wall. Mighty impressive, I must say.

A: A four day All Star break.

I went to the celeb game last year. I went for the Futures Game, and fully expected to leave after the introductions of the celeb game, but it was actually pretty entertaining.

Boomer Esiason is in the celebrity game, so this will definitely happen.
   12. SoSH U at work Posted: July 15, 2013 at 04:01 PM (#4495007)
SS Bucky Dent

Dent (and his sub-.200 average) led the voting in 1982 until the very last moment, when eventual MVP Robin Yount surged ahead. I always thought that last-minute burst of support was a sham, either that or possibly Lee McPhail and Company simply spent an entire week punching chads.

   13. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: July 15, 2013 at 04:01 PM (#4495009)
I always organize a pool for the HR Derby, just a few bucks, random draw. The winner takes all. The real loser is whoever gets the second place finisher and keeps watching it past the point that its bearable and ends up winning nothing.

This looks like a joke based on misspelling of "defection", but "defection" is spelled correctly, so...

So Davis bats cleanup for the All Star team, but he’s stuck in the 5-hole in the Orioles lineup?

If it wasn't for Brandon Inge, Cuddyer would be the least exiting derby participant ever.

Watch, Cuddyer is going to win and we all will look like fools.

A ONE-HOUR pre-game show? Just kill me.

I have to go to a bar to watch this hoo-ha, so when will the actual HITTING start? I mean as in 8:30 or 9:00 or 10:45? I really don't want to watch Berman's fat face blabbering on a muted TV in a bar for hours on end.
   26. Gamingboy Posted: July 15, 2013 at 07:38 PM (#4495180)
Hee-Seop Choi

I vaguely remember this as being part of the promotion for the first WBC. Abreu took part in that HRD as well, to represent Venezuela.

Prince looked for quality over quantity that round. After his first two swings I was thinking he'd get to double-digits.

Eta: if so, he chose poorly, seems like.

   53. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: July 15, 2013 at 08:27 PM (#4495219)
8 participants is a typical number.

All the lineups are at Wikipedia.

The 1991 Home Run Derby was quite the mismatch. Joe Carter, Cecil Fielder, Cal Ripken Jr. and Danny Tartabull versus Paul O'Neill, George Bell, Chris Sabo and Howard Johnson. The NL team also had Strawberry, Will Clark, Bobby Bonilla, Eddie Murray and Andre Dawson on it, so I wonder why those guys were picked. Better than Felix Jose, Craig Biggio, Tony Gwynn and Brett Butler, I suppose.

ETA2: How was Norfolk not on the "all the way to..." list?

I didn't think either Cuddy or Wright could hit any that far.
   55. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: July 15, 2013 at 08:30 PM (#4495222)
Michael Cuddyer did the Corey Hart act.

I wonder how much money I would have won in Vegas if I bet that Cuddyer would have more first round homers than Prince Fielder.

Cespedes is pretty amazing.

Cespedes should cool off, conserve some energy for the later rounds. This is a Hamiltonian performance.

ETA: Holy ####, I'd forgotten that Hamilton hit 28 in the first round. So not Hamiltonian, but still pretty friggin impressive.
   70. Gamingboy Posted: July 15, 2013 at 08:44 PM (#4495240)
Cespedes is going to see his T-shirt sales go up.

Funny thing is, most of Cespedes' in-game homers are lasers to LF - seems like they never get more than about 20 feet high, and they clear the wall in about 1.2 seconds.
I wouldn't want to play third base against him, is what I'm saying.
