Home Run Derby: Follow up to Vernon Well’s Heckler Ball

Last Wednesday during a game at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field, Raycher and some of the other “Bleacher Creatures” had a running, good natured banter going with Wells that ended with Wells tossing a ball to Raycher complete with a tongue-in-cheek message.

Really, this is pretty funny. Must’ve been an amazing heckle.

Text of the message: “Dear Mr. Dork, Here is your ball! Can you please tell me which gas station you work at, so when you are pumping my gas I can yell at you!!! Now, Sit-down, Shut-up and enjoy the game! Your favorite center fielder.

Now I know which game not to attend. All "superb" hecklers should be required to post schedules of their upcoming games.

I'm reminded of a goalie who played at Denver University, by the name of Sinhue Wallenheimo. He loved getting into it with the fans. He'd talk back to them during stoppages in play, and occasionally just when the puck was at the other end of the rink. He'd egg on their heckling. Show them the puck after a good save. Bow to them. Perform for them. Whatever it took. It worked for him, too. I can't find the exact numbers, but for his career, he was significantly better on the road than he was at home.

*Shrug* You'd think with a last name ending in s and a BS in English I'd be more careful with such things. I guess not.

I'm always a little surprised that guys--relievers spring to mind most notably--don't try more of that. If it works for guys in WWE, it ought to work for Todd Coffey.

I've sat in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium during a game against Toronto, and there was definitely some good-natured back-and-forth going on. The "heckling" basically alternated between "Vernon Wells is a horse's @#$%" on the one hand and "Vernon, come play for us next year" on the other.

He definitely seemed like a cool guy after that game...I also liked him on ESPN during last year's playoffs.
