Homer Bailey is all grown up

“I won a few games in a month. Is that a big accomplishment in the grand scheme? No. I still had a 4 ERA. I still walked more (batters) than I wanted to. I gave up nine runs in a game. A good month?’’ Bailey snorted. “Let’s try it for a whole season.’’

This is how you want your 23-year-olds thinking, in baseball or anywhere else. It suggests a maturity that promotes growth. The shrinks would call it “self awareness.’’ Homer Bailey knows what he doesn’t know.

The last month of the ’09 season “did open my eyes to what could happen,’’ he says. “I know it’s there. But I haven’t for a second hung a hat on it. It’s over.’’

Homer Bailey's only 23? Seems like he's been around forever.

EDIT: OK, I thought that he was with the Yankees and the Reds traded for him. Who am I thinking of?

OK, OK, I can't figure out what I was thinking. I thought that there must have been some pitching prospect traded from the Yankees to the Reds that I was mixing up. But I don't see anything.

Still, it does seem like I've been hearing about Homer Bailey for a while.

Holy crap, I think it's Ed Yarnall. Or possibly Brandon Claussen (who Dolf mentioned above).

OK, carry on.

Ed Yarnall was involved in a lot of important trades for someone who sucked.

I figured you might be thinking of Phil Hughes, with whom I will always associate Homer Bailey; they were Yovani Gallardo's competition.
