The Phillies for Lunch: Half smiles of the decomposing.
But is it getting harder to come to the field every day with the swagger this team so desperately needs?
“Not necessarily,” he said. “The swagger is always there; it’s the energy and feeling that you get from the well-being of the team. There’s always an opportunity to smile at the guys on the field. That does bring energy. It makes the dark times not so dark.
“With baseball, you have to learn to separate yourself from your results. Who you are on the field doesn’t represent who you really are as a person. For me, it’s always easy to smile.
“But there are times where smiling isn’t going to get the job done. You can feel good about yourself and positive about what you want to accomplish that day, but playing the game gets the job done. Winning helps that smile and gives everyone the energy to come to the ball park the next day.”
Right now, even Rollins must be struggling to muster the energy to come to the park every day. The Phillies have lost 10 of their last 11 games and are in danger of becoming the first team in MLB history to win 100 games one season and lose at least 90 games the next.
