Houston Chronicle: Astros clobber Reds to complete 4-game sweep

Michael Bourn, Lance Berkman and Geoff Blum each homered to send the streaking Astros to a 13-4 win and a four-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon. In their first game without injured slugger [Carlos] Lee, the Astros got a season-high in runs and extra-base hits (eight) and rode a strong performance from lefthander Wandy Rodriguez, who gave up five hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

The Astros have won 12 of their past 16 games to get to within one game of .500 (58-59) for the first time since they were 33-34 on June 12. They have won nine games in a row at Great American Ball Park.

The awful Reds have lost six in a row and 14 of 16 and were swept in four games by the Astros for the first time since 2003.

Hey, if they were still in the NL West they'd only be 1.5 games back (and that's without the benefit of a schedule heavy on NL West teams like the current NL West teams have).

The Reds starters are a collective mess. Arroyo is getting by on arm angles and changing speeds. His breaking stuff has no snap. Volquez and Cueto are both pushing the ball by the fourth inning. Harang is a mess. Fogg is just a guy.

And Bailey has no reason to be in the majors.

As a Pirates fan - this is great news. The Astros thinking they are close will cause many dumb moves this winter. The Reds will surely waste their young talent in even dumber moves. This leaves the new, more savvy front office of the Pirates a clear path to 4th place. Excited about 4th place? As a Pirates fan - yes, yes I am.

What in the heck is up with Blum's power surge? He's got Gorman Thomas-like numbers!

Dunn to the D-Backs?

Where are they going to play him? LF or 1st?

No idea. I'm going to guess and say LF.
