Houston Chronicle: Cooper defends small-ball call

One day after Cecil Cooper’s much-debated decision not to bunt with Ivan Rodriguez in the ninth inning of the opener against the Royals, Cooper defended his call, and Lance Berkman defended his manager while disagreeing with the decision.

Rodriguez came up with men on first and second, nobody out and a one-run deficit. He struck out for the first out and was followed by Kaz Matsui, who struck out, and Jason Michaels, who ended the game with a soft grounder back to the pitcher.

“If I was managing the team, I would have tried to bunt in that situation just because they had their closer (Joakim Soria), and it’s going to be tough to get anything done,” said Berkman, who nonetheless understood the source of Cooper’s logic.

“I don’t think people should be outraged and think that it’s indefensible that we didn’t bunt,” Berkman said. “ That’s the beauty of baseball; there’s no right answer. Heck, if (Rodriguez) singles and I go first-to-third, Coop’s a genius.”

Well, even if Rodriguez bunts successfully, the Astros don't score if the rest of the inning unfolds as happened (K + tapper back to the mound). It's hard to get all worked up about Cooper's decision when the real problem was that Soria shut down the opposition after he ran into a bit of trouble.

I agree somewhat with Berkman on the 9th inning decision: I would have used a PHer to bunt in that situation, but it isn't a cut and dried decision...both options can be defended. What is more puzzling about Cooper's use of the sac bunt is the seeming inconsistency. He called a sac bunt in two earlier innings when the sac bunt was a bad percentage play. This is particularly true when he sac bunted after Bourn, one of the league's leading base stealers, got a lead off hit...a decision that the Royals' pitcher, Greinke, said made his job easier in the inning. Yet, when Cooper gets to a situation where the sac bunt is potentially a good play (9th inning, down by 1 run, with runners on 1st, 2d, and no outs), he rejects the sac bunt. This isn't the first time that pattern has occurred. I start to get the feeling that Cooper only wants to use the sac bunt when it is a bad percentage play.

I would have bunted to help IRod avoid the GIDP.

Strage headline. I guess it was a small-ball call, though a call against it.

it's a tough call. It's a good time for a bunt but I wouldn't think Pudge is a very good bunter. Pudge also isn't a very good hitter but he's better than Matsui and Michaels. I don't know who Cooper had left on the bench to pinch-hit for those guys but it's not like the Astros are overloaded with good hitters.

In the end I'd probably bunt ... the maybe bunt again with matsui.
