How much is Tanaka worth? MLB execs weigh in on $67M mystery | New York Post

A second high-ranking official of a second big-market club offered this anonymous wisdom: “I suspect Tanaka, with only three years [left], may look to get more, but I think a bigger factor is how much he likes playing there. It’s hard for me to see him opting out.”

On paper, he looks like a less durable version of Arrieta and Darvish. And Cueto who also has an opt-out decision to make coming off a poor season. Tanaka is the youngest of this bunch but still looks like the fourth best in that group. Doesn't mean he shouldn't come out.

I am a fan of Tanaka and think he is a very smart pitcher who knows what he is doing on the mound, but if he does opt out, from a risk/reward perspective, I very much hope the Yankees let him go rather than extend him beyond the three years remaining in his current contract. The arm injury has undoubtedly affected his performance, as his split simply does not have the bite it had his rookie year.

The arm injury has undoubtedly affected his performance

The guy put up a 143 ERA+ in 199.2 IP last year. The injury didn't impact his performance that much.
