Diamondbacks’ Yoshihisa Hirano riding splitter to big-league success

Sometimes his splitter dives straight down. Other times it behaves almost like a slider, darting down and to his glove side.

He can bounce it, which he did multiple times to the Dodgers’ Kyle Farmer on Tuesday night, striking him out on a splitter in the dirt with the winning run on third in the 10th inning. He can also throw it for strikes, something he did to freeze the next batter, Chase Utley, to end the inning in a game the Diamondbacks went on to win.

Okay, you gotta go back into the posting dashboard and edit the post title, or else the front page is gonna stay messed up.

I don't even know how to do that.

Hirano didn’t have one at the beginning of his career. Back in 2006, he was a starting pitcher who threw mostly fastballs and sliders. The way he remembers it, the slider was sometimes a good pitch for him, but it wasn’t consistent, and so he started tinkering with a splitter.

This was a sort of natural progression in Japan. He recalls watching games on television as a kid and noticing that nearly every good pitcher featured a splitter. That remains the case today; it seems nearly every pitcher who transitions to the majors from Japan features a splitter.

“For most professional pitchers in Japan,” he said, “probably at some point in everyone’s life they’ve tried throwing a splitter.”
