Hello Hello Vern Rapp!...damn.
Those three — Red Schoendienst, Whitey Herzog and Tony La Russa — will be honored Saturday night at a first-of-its-kind ceremony as part of the annual Baseball Hall of Fame weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The three account for the Cardinals’ four most recent World Series titles.
...Schoendienst, Herzog and La Russa won 3,271 regular-season games among them as Cardinals managers and guided the club for 38 years collectively. (Schoendienst added a couple of months between managerial changes involving Herzog and Joe Torre.)
La Russa won 1,408 games with the Cardinals, Schoendienst 1,041 and Herzog 822. The latter two are in the Hall of Fame, and Schoendienst said La Russa soon would be there.
“Hell, yeah,” Schoendienst said. “He’ll go in the first year he’s eligible,” which will be 2014.
Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said the special presentation “gives us an opportunity to celebrate aspects of the game other than inductions into the Hall of Fame. Whether these were cultural aspects, or the game as it unfolds on the field today, we wanted to celebrate things that were significant and relevant.”
