Hummell: Criticism of McGwire irks Cardinals Hall of Famer Bob Gibson

He is aware of the criticism of McGwire claiming that he took steroids only to improve his health. (“They got injured because they were taking steroids,” argued Herzog.) But Gibson said, “I suspect that most of those really good ballplayers that admitted doing them, probably didn’t need them anyway.”

This is not to say that Gibson never would have considering using them.

“Absolutely,” he said. “I’m just happy they weren’t available (when he played), because if I knew somebody else was doing it and appeared to be getting an edge, I think I have would have been tempted.”

A Hall of Famer admitting he would have considered taking steroids?  Refreshingly honest!

I like how no one would have been tempted to use them to get the edge--it's always they would have been "tempted" to do it in self-defense to keep someone from getting the edge on them. The poor helpless things. This song and dance says a lot about human nature and how it present itself in relation to public policy and institutions.

This makes me like Bob Gibson again.

I find this to be a distinction without a real difference. It's all about staying at the top, one way or the other.

Reminds me of when I was in high school. A BMOC got caught in a motel room with this girl by her father. The girl's father accused him of "ruining" her. He wailed as he warding off the cuffing and slapping, "But she was ruint already!"

Yeah I think it's more of an "I'm the best as is, but if someone is better than me because they are juicing, I'm sure as hell not gonna take a back seat to that ####\" deal.

Which supposedly, according to some people (like Ken Griffey, I believe), is what Barry Bonds's mindset was that led him to get with a steroids program.

If I remember right, Griffey is innocent of this. My memory is that someone else told a story of being at Griffey's house when Bonds said that to compete he was going to try steroids. Griffey specifically DENIED having heard any such conversation at his place, much less having been part of one. Actually, if I remember really right, Griffey said more, that there was no such conversation at his place and he could vouch for Bonds on that.

It was the incomparable Jeff Pearlman who concocted this fantasy. Griffey's not the first guy to call Pearlman a liar about Bonds; Jay Canizaro did too.

This is a great point.

It's a PR-motivated statement. It's reaction as opposed to proaction -- people have a much harder time condemning it.

"Irk" is one the all-time greatest words in the English language.

That is all.
