Hyde: Hair-brained policy raises Hanley’s ire

No cornrowed hair!
Let’s run down to the practice field
attention and fame
a career, career, career, career

Hanley Ramirez, the lone Marlin with five stars to his resume, walked through Thursday morning’s clubhouse with a message written across his chest in Sharpie.

“I’m sick of this s—-,” it read. He was serious. “I’m angry,” he said.

“I want to be traded,” Ramirez soon said.

No, he doesn’t. Not really. And by the end of this column the temperature will cool down. But it’s never good when your best player entered Thursday’s game batting .091 for the spring and blamed it on some silly organizational decrees.

For a while, Hanley vs. Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! sounded like The Mane Event of spring. Ramirez, see, used to wear his hair in cornrows.

“I had to cut it,” he said.

He also had to take off the jewelry dangling from his neck while playing.

“It’s incredible,” he said an hour later in the dugout, still angry. “We’re big-leaguers.”

...“We want to look professional,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Nice and neat.”

Are we talking about the "Perfect Sound Forever" book? I've never read it either. I mean, what else is there to know about the group's development that isn't discernable from what's been revealed on the reissues and the DVD?

Sure - but wouldn't you want to read a book with tons of interesting stories about the group, their times, the personalities? A book that featured great writing about what it was about Pavement's music that connected with so many? I sure as hell would enjoy that. This ain't that book.

If that existed, I'd surely read it.

I am not a full-fledged Pavementarian like some guys, but I would like to put in my .02 in support of "Trigger Cut", "Harness Your Hopes" and "All My Friends" as songs I particularly enjoy.

The five stars thing makes me think he's been spending too much time with OOTP.

Any list like this always starts with Frontwards for me. Can't argue with the rest of the top 5 there, really.
To be fair, I was going in chronological order.

WTF is pavement?
The Method Man reference was the only thing I understood.

Surely you're yanking our crank, Eraser-X. As a long-standing Primate, it's impossible for you not to know who Pavement are. They get referenced enough around here, after all.

I'm actually not sure what a Method Man is. Is it like Marathon Man?

Crap, I missed a Pavement thread. Well, maybe I can hold out hope for a GBV thread here in the next few days...

The power is in your hands, JGLB. Just post baseball articles and include GBV quotes in the intros until someone starts up an offtopic thread. In fact, I'll do one right now.

Eso, I'll trade you the complete works of Derrick Jensen for one CD of bootleg Pavement.

I was hoping for a Hanley Ramirez thread.

The beauty of Primer is that I was thinking as I noticed 100+ posts, "I wonder if this is about the Marlins, or if it's a heated discussion about whether pro athletes should have dress codes and grooming restrictions?" And then I open it and it turns out it's a "Rank the 10 best Pavement songs" thread, and that didn't even make me blink an eye.

Ah Alex, you have an admirably long memory!

Well, how about I just give you a link to two of my favorite Pavement shows instead? These two shows should be taken as a pair: 3/4/94 in Cologne, and 3/6/94 in Frankfurt. Wonderful -- WONDERFUL -- sound quality, incredible setlists (they were performed the same week that Crooked Rain was officially released and, between the two, give you versions of every single song on the album except "Range Life"), tons of B-sides and rarities (early versions of "Pueblo," "Fight This Generation," "Brinx Job," "Brink Of The Clouds")...my favorite pair of Pavement shows ever. Enjoy, my neo-primitivist friend.

Mucho gracias, amigo.
