Wilson Contreras got all of that one. Grand slam.

Be disappointing if the Phillies don't take two of three.

One of those 'spring' days where we are reminded why the Brewers built a retractable roof. I know they are in Colorado this weekend, but current temps 41 degrees and raining in Milwaukee. I see its about 50 at Wrigley with the same. Meanwhile 175 miles to the SE, it is 87 here in Indy.

Boy, Bryant smoked that ball.

That's one of those Maddon moves that frustrate me. 6th inning, 6-2 lead ... either uses Duensing for an inning or use Strop for an inning, don't play needless match-up games in the 6th inning with a comfy lead.

John Flaherty in the YES Booth, speaking of the Gray/Romine battery ... "It's hard to explain, but something just works between these two guys"

Next 3 batters: long homerun, bullet single, long homerun.

LOL.

The cheque is in the Maile!

This cat didn't hit his weight last year, but Jays backup catcher Luke Maile is hitting about .500 RISP this year. RBI off Chris Sale.

has any regression ever been as mean as this one?

This misery for Didi continues ...
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: May 11, 2018 at 09:33 PM (#5671100)
that's brutal
Yankees trail 6-4 in the 7th, bags loaded, one out, Judge is up
no way you "pitch around him" - but they did walk him for 6-5
then Didi with a short flyout
then Stanton does the same

I'll admit it, I'm starting to feel bad for our "Didi"

At this point though, Christ, Boon-ey, move him down in the order.

I'm a Cardinal fan(obviously) but I'm also a fan of all former Cardinals and when you see them doing good, provided they left the team on good terms, then it's a good thing...

Matt Adams is absolutely killing it for Washington. 100 pa, 1.112 ops, 198 ops+, 1.2 war...
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 09:47 PM (#5671108)
Early season conclusions.... Machado is going to get PAID this off season.....
   26. Jay Seaver Posted: May 11, 2018 at 09:49 PM (#5671109)
On the one hand, don't run on the Red Sox outfield. On the other, Pillar looked pretty safe to me. Doesn't look like Nunez ever touched him.

The replay officials say otherwise, though.
   27. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 11, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5671110)
So now that the Yankees are 2 runs down (instead of just 1), Boone brings on Robertson ... even though he would have brought him in last inning had the Yankees tied it up or taken the lead.

BRILLIANT!

Aw, I knew the odds of Sale coming out for the 10th were minuscule, but I was hoping.

Matt Barnes can’t help but walk a leadoff man.
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:15 PM (#5671125)
never say Aaron Judge is a bad teammate - with Gardner on 1st and 1 out in the 9th, trailing 10-5, he hits into the tailor-made DP so that Didi must bat no more tonite

HOW WILL DID GET A HIT TOMORROW?!
   37. Chip Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:17 PM (#5671127)
Matt Barnes sucks.
   38. Tom Nawrocki Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:26 PM (#5671129)
Rockies had the bases loaded with nobody out and Nolan Arenado hits a line drive to Ryan Braun in left field. Braun concedes the run and throws to second - but pitcher Chad Bettis, on third base, starts toward the plate and then stops. Just inexplicable. They weren't even going to make a play on him.

Fortunately, with two outs, Trevor Story cleans the bases with a gift "triple" that goes under Braun's glove.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:28 PM (#5671130)
turn the game on... men on first and second and one out.... right off the bat not looking good.
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:30 PM (#5671131)
damnit... I'm finding a reason to have four monitors tonight... pffft.... I knew baseball season was going to convince me that three monitors wasn't enough. (I only had two last year added a third this season, and my gf said I couldn't add a fourth and I'm thinking "why would I need a fourth." and apparently I need a fourth..... or at least want a fourth.... well technically I want six, I can see how that would work out great.)
   41. Ray (CTL) Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5671133)
116 pitches for Sale tonight. That's a lot these days, right?
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:35 PM (#5671134)
I missed Pham's caught stealing... that was his fifth caught stealing of the year... maybe telling everyone on the planet that you plan on getting 30/30 before the season started was not the best tactic.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:41 PM (#5671137)
Dejong is a strikeout machine, but still a 9 pitch plate appearance is not a negative.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5671138)
I just posted that and DeJong then crushed that 9th pitch over the fence... I was prefacing it as an inevitable strikeout and instead it's 3-0 Cardinals.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5671140)
Carson Kelly, the Didi Gregarious of the Cardinals (at least his last 20 or so pa of Didi)
nothing about his swing or batting makes me think he's a future major league player...

I'm really close to thinking he's the guy we need to trade to make room for Knizner, not the other way around.
   46. Bote Man Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:48 PM (#5671141)
With 2 on, 2 out in the 4th inning Max Scherzer swings his wet newspaper and drives the ball the other way into deep RCF AND GOES RIGHT OVER HIS GLOVE! He missed it! But Ruben Rivera missed second base!

OK, I was just kidding about that last part, but he did drive in a run to put the Nats back up 2-1.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 10:54 PM (#5671142)
uggh....not about the game, but about the conversation with the announcers on the broadcast... this season it's become very apparent that the announcers aren't pre-planning conversations or working together... Joe is talking about the 30/30 thing that Pham has stated he is going for...no Cardinal has ever done that, the closest is Ray Lankford with 31 homeruns and 26 stolen bases while McGwire was doing something like hitting 70 homeruns... the point of Joe's comment was Ray being a hell of a player that was overshadowed.... Al instead took it to mean let's talk about Mark McGwire....

I'm not a huge fan of Joe Mclaughlin, but with the Cardinal hof vote it's clear he is celebrating for Lankford's inclusion and why it makes sense...
   48. Jay Seaver Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:02 PM (#5671143)
Luke Maile. What the heck?
   49. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:04 PM (#5671144)
And FINALLY the Blue Jays do something besides strike out strike out strike out strike out. But all's well that ends well.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:05 PM (#5671145)
Harrison Bader on the other hand, has looked very promising.

Just looking at bb-ref war, I think it's overestimating both Wong and Bader this year but at the same time it's showing a fairly accurate pitcher of the elite defenders on the team.... (it has both Wong and Bader at 7 runs above average, which is absurdly high for Bader relative to his playing time, and slightly high for Wong.... over the course of a normal season I can see Wong as a 10 or even a 15 run guy, but not a 30 run guy that he is more or less projected to be....
   51. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:09 PM (#5671147)
umm....this poor Padres pitcher...Cardinals up 6-0 in the 3rd inning as they have now hit 4 homeruns in this game.
   52. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:20 PM (#5671150)
Justin Upton with his sixth Homer this month.

Top of the 7th in Arizona with the Nats leading 2-1, Max Scherzer smacks his 2nd hit of the game, a bloop into RF for a single. This guy is a friggin animal!

   55. phredbird Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:26 PM (#5671154)
are the cardinals breaking an unwritten rule of baseball by having the pitcher bunt over a runner with a 6 run lead? discuss.
   56. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:38 PM (#5671157)
Early NL Cy Young Award leader Max Scherzer looks to be done after 7 innings (99 pitches) against the Diamondbacks, retiring the last 15 batters, giving up 4 hits & 1 run for the game, with 11 Ks. Will be 7-1, if the 2-1 lead holds.

EDIT: Anthony Rendon HR makes it 3-1.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:42 PM (#5671158)
Am I the only person who feels bad when their team beats up on an obvious minor league team? 7-0 Cardinals, and the Padres are playing like an AA team.

   58. phredbird Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:44 PM (#5671159)
we needed a blowout and a breather. not that it's over yet.
   59. Bote Man Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:48 PM (#5671160)
Dan Kolko @masnKolko
From Nats PR, Scherzer’s 70 10-plus strikeout games have tied Tom Seaver for 10th-most all-time.

I'm telling you, Max Scherzer is must-see TV. Or just go to see him at a ballpark near you. He can hit, he can pitch, he can stalk off the mound after a K.

Mark Zuckerman @MarkZuckerman
Scherzer's updated season numbers: 1.69 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 91 K, 14 BB in 58.2 IP.

You mean Dan McLaughlin, of course, not Joe.

I'm not nearly ready to give up on Carson Kelly yet. Yeah, he's 0-for-tonight and 0-for-the season, but he's hit the ball hard every time tonight. They'll start falling in.
   61. Bote Man Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:56 PM (#5671162)
OK, the last bullpen cart I saw was used by Jake Taylor in Major League. So, like, uh...what's the deal?? Is this a Diamondbacks thing or is it making a comeback?
   62. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 11, 2018 at 11:58 PM (#5671163)
Lance Lynn can't make it out of the fifth: he'll leave with two outs and the bases loaded. Another rough night, another data point in favor of the Cardinals front office not signing him.

Yes....not sure where that Joe came from (Joe Buck?)

I'm not ready to give up on Kelly either, but he just hasn't looked good in anyway in his major league career... both defensively and offensively. His bat looks like a shortstop bat, and his defense looks like an average catcher....neither of which feels like a reason to push Yadier out the door.

Now I'm so jazzed up I'm watching this Twins-Angels tilt on the Minnesota feed. What am I seeing here? Is it an extremely heavy marine layer or is it misting or drizzling in always-sunny, perfect, perfect, perfect SoCal??

Thought I'd seen it all in 50+ years of watching baseball, but not this. Luke Gregerson pitching for the Cards, up 9-4, 2 out in the 9th, runner at 3rd, 2 out. Gregerson winds and pitches, and it's fouled off. One of the field umps calls time and gets everyone together for a conference. After a discussion, they decide Gregerson had balked and sent the runner home. Apparently nobody called it at the time, they decided it after the fact. I watched a replay and it looked like a perfectly normal windup and pitch. Even the plate ump looked baffled when Gregerson asked what he'd done, he had to bring in one of the base umps to explain it.

Getting the Call Right™ >>>>>>>> entertaining the fans
   78. Perry Posted: May 12, 2018 at 02:07 AM (#5671182)
In the press conference after the game Matheny said the umps said it was a balk because Gregerson didn't declare before pitching with a runner on 3rd whether he was going to use a windup or stretch. But in that case why did they wait till after the 2nd pitch to call it? Also, Matheny said, usually the umps ask you to declare, in this case they didn't. He also said it was dumb to call it on a guy like Gregerson, whose stretch motion looks nothing like his windup. He said he could see it with some guys whose motions from the stretch and windup look quite similar, but not Gregerson. Very weird, all in all.
   79. cardsfanboy Posted: May 12, 2018 at 06:29 AM (#5671185)
2nd balk I believe called against the Cardinals this year, they had zero (I'm going from memory) last year.

Is this something they have to do? I've been following baseball for decades and never heard of this.

New in 2017. Pitchers have to do it when there's a runner at 3rd. Apparently due mostly to David Price; umps said they were having a hard time distinguishing between his windup and stretch motions. It's not just him, though, a lot of pitchers' stretch and windup motions look almost the same nowadays. BITD it was easy to tell them apart, but so many pitchers now have almost no windup and their initial stance looks just like a "stretch" stance, facing sideways and with their sidefoot on the rubber.

Tough shitsky! That's part of the cat-and-mouse game of pitcher versus base runner. Like salvo I had never heard of this declaration rule before this moment. I don't like it.

p.s. I have no lawn, I live in an apartment.

Oh, come on, it's easy. When Price is in the windup, he takes half an hour to deliver the pitch. When he's in the stretch, it's closer to 45 minutes.
