I can not believe (#actually, I can) the relentless one-up-manship to over-dramatize Hurricane Florence. It was downgraded from a Cat 4 to a Cat 1 at landfall, but that hasn't stopped the use of terms such as "catastrophic" which is reserved for Category 5 storms. How will they crank it up beyond 11 for an even worse storm now that everything is turned up to 11 to get more money?? (The more outlets that take your TV station's feed, the more money you rake in; this leads to sensationalized reports, like the Weather Channel guy rocking back and forth against the catastrophic winds in his blue slicker while 2 random citizens calmly stroll behind him in T-shirts and shorts.)

For example, I was originally thinking the Nats @ Braves games Saturday and Sunday would be complete washouts. Now the same outlets that had been waving their hands and screaming about how "catastrophic" this storm would be for the entire Solar System are now showing 0.1 inches of rain total to fall on the Atlanta area when all is said and done.

On Saffir-Simpson scale (which, unfortunately is the only one generally used) but there are actually 2 other hurricane related measures to consider. From wunderground (last night):

Although Florence had become a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale, it remained a Category 5 heavy rain and inland flooding threat, and a Category 3 storm surge threat.

Think the "Harvey of the East", this is going to be a flooding and environmental disaster.

Most GIDP opportunities this season without a GIDP

84 Matt Carpenter
29 Ryan McMahon
26 Ramón Laureano
25 Steven Duggar
25 Tyler O'Neill

Carp really stands out there, cause he doesn't seem like the type who should beat one out. I guess the answer is just don't hit it on the ground.
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: September 14, 2018 at 07:44 PM (#5744649)
Another reason that Carpenter should be batting second...if he didn't have the mental block of struggling whenever he's not leading off.

If there was even a remote chance for Robby Scott to make the Red Sox playoff roster, he’s lost it.

Max Scherzer is sweating like a bridegroom in Atlanta. His cap was soaked so he requested a new one from the dugout after giving up a bases-loaded 2 out hit to Acuña on a 3-2 pitch. Of course, Laz Diaz had to show him who's boss by telling him he couldn't switch, which Max suitably ignored and put on the replacement (dry) cap and went back out to the mound.
   13. Adam Starblind Posted: September 14, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5744663)
When do we get to mention that the Mets have been on a good run for six weeks now. If they win tonight, they'll be 25-15 over their last 40 games. Front three of deGrom, Wheeler, and Syndergaard, plus the very good play of Rosario, McNeil, Conforto, Nimmo, has added up.

Well, that was just dumb luck. Flowers spanks a grounder juuuuuuuust deflected enough by Rendon's glove to veer the opposite direction from Turner's path, so it became a seeing-eye 2 RBI single. This, after Inciarte smacked a hanging curveball into the RF corner. Max is looking rather hittable tonight.
   16. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 14, 2018 at 08:58 PM (#5744675)
Sure would have been nice for a few of these runs on that last road trip ...

Bryce Harper once again trying to be the hero unleashes a throw toward home plate that was cut off by Ryan Zimmerman, but since nobody was covering 2B Albies was able to advance from 1B easily and later scored with 2 outs. This is one aspect of Harper's game that I won't miss next year.

While perfect games are awesome, it'd be better for pitchers to put no-hitters completely out of mind and go for the W.

Cardinals have a rally going against Buehler in the fifth...

1-0 Dodgers into the sixth.

Ump show in Atlanta as Laz Diaz does his level best to bait Bryce Harper into engaging his sh|t. I don't know what his gripe was with Harper, but he reportedly walked down the line toward the Nats dugout as Bryce gleefully ignored him, walked into the dugout and continued to ignore him as he barked into the dugout between innings. F@ck that guy, he needs to retire if this is his shtick.

Jack Flaherty has been impressive despite poor command of his fastball. Just his second walk at 100 pitches.

Hope not, especially since the Brewers just went back ahead and they're about to drive out Archer before five innings.

Dodgers get a gift witha run-scoring wild pitch, but Puig makes the final out trying to score from second on the bad throw.

Can't really blame him, as the Dodgers are batting a mlb-worst .193 with RISP w/2 outs.
   41. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 14, 2018 at 10:17 PM (#5744715)
OK, I'll leave Happ alone for a bit.

Lazaro Diaz is bound and determined to "get" Bryce Harper. He called a pitch a strike that was over a foot outside the strike zone in an effort to provoke Bryce. It worked, to a point, but Deivi Martinez at long last charged out to the mound to give Diaz the what-for. Alas, Deivi was not ejected.

Word from the field is that earlier Harper (in CF on defense) was gesturing his displeasure with the strike zone, Diaz noticed, stopped the proceedings to stand in front of home plate and bark at Bryce way out in CF and Deivi in the dugout.

I was perusing the wonderful bobblehead display at Marlins Park and I have to say that the overwhelming majority of bobbleheads could be potato heads for as little as they resemble the model. In fact, I think there actually WAS a potato head bobble.

If you mean Bob Carpenter and F.P. Santangelo on MASN, you are in the *extreme* minority among educated baseball fans. I find them inoffensive, but not particularly informative and often wrong when I actually pay attention to what they say. I always opt for the radio guys whenever possible, which is 99% of the time for me.

ugh

What a gutsy performance from Walker Buehler tonight, striking out Matt Carpenter with two on to end the eighth.. Looks like the Dodgers have a legit second ace on their hands.
   56. Dale Sams Posted: September 14, 2018 at 11:01 PM (#5744741)
I'm a sucker for a familiar voice. Dunno F.P. but he sounds like MASN borrowed somebody from the stands to do color....which is kinda amusing.

Puig with an insurance shot, his second of the game.

Two nights in a row Dodger killer Matt Adams blisters a first-pitch out at first. Jansen looked a lot better, teams now tied for last wild card berth.
   64. Astroenteritis Posted: September 14, 2018 at 11:23 PM (#5744755)
Crap, the Astros are never going to win this division if they keep having to play home games.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: September 14, 2018 at 11:24 PM (#5744756)
ugly first two games for this series... the Cardinals just look like they are sleep walking right now. Even after managing to score a ton of runs against Kershaw, it still looked like they have quit. I miss the energy this team had in June and July, this team just doesn't seem to look like they care over the past 2 months or so, even when they do win.
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: September 14, 2018 at 11:26 PM (#5744757)
I do need to go to Schnucks(local grocery store chain) to buy the Matt Carpenter Salsa...although $6.99 seems like a lot for salsa.... Ms Renfro's Mango Habenero is only $4.99....

Don't they have the best NL record since the break? Win like 20+ games in August? Not too many teams would look good vs Buehler tonight. Last night that got lit up early yet still got the tying run to the plate.

I'd certainly prefer they miss the playoffs.

They have no passion or personality. Their conga line ritual has disappeared, their enjoyment of the game has disappeared, they just look like they are going through the motions right now.
