I adopted a new hockey team last season, the Colorado Avalanche. Why? Because what had become the symbol of the Boston Bruins was traded there with the hopes of winning a title. A title that everyone who watches hockey knows the Bruins are nowhere close to winning. Not too long ago, I loved the Bruins like I love the Red Sox. Jeremy Jacobs has overseen the slide to mediocrity because he is a businessman. He is in the business of making money and couldn’t care less if his franchise wins championships. The Bruins have one of the lowest payrolls in the NHL yet have the highest ticket prices. Go figure. If he wins the bid for the Red Sox, I can see myself becoming a fan of whichever team Nomar signs with.
For as long as it has been without winning, at least the effort was there. With Jacobs, the only effort will be toward putting fannies in the seats and selling hot dogs. And in Boston, as the last 35 years have proved, you can sell out the stadium without winning championships.
So, last night, I watched with joy my adopted hockey team and the symbol of the Bruins raise the Cup. Deep down, I resented the fact that Bourque was not wearing a Boston jersey. I have Jeremy Jacobs to thank for that.
