Ike Davis of New York Mets not concerned about 4-for-27 start at plate - NYPOST.com

Ike Davis, future hitting coach.

“I feel great, I’m seeing it great and I swung at one bad pitch [Monday] and that was basically it,” Davis said. “I’m fouling back a lot of pitches I should hit. Once I actually start hitting those pitches instead of fouling them back, that’s when I start to get hot.”

Davis will hit. He's not going to be an All-Star but he's going to hit enough to post a 115-120 OPS+.

More importantly, when do we start to get irrationally excited about Rafael Montero? 1.54 ERA in 11.2 IP in AA so far with a 15/0 K/BB ratio with only 8 hits allowed.

What's the over/under on the number of Cy Youngs he will win? 2.5?

0 with the Mets, 1 with the expansion Expos, 1 with the Dodgers and a 2nd place finish with the Red Sox.

You know the big leagues are tough when you can hit one bad pitch into 23 outs.

And one more with the Cardinals with another top-5 finish after the Cardinals sign him to a low-salary incentive based deal after everyone else thinks he is washed up.

For the reasons given, if he becomes a relatively reliable 7th-8th inning guy, I'll do a cartwheel.

I love these articles one week into the season.

To follow up on #1, d'Arnaud has turned into an OBP machine. And the Mets have definitely won the Dickey deal, on Buck's performance alone.

Ring Lardner was way ahead of his time when he wrote "Alibi Ike". He makes a hell of a lot of excuses for being the new Russell Branyan. And I'm tired of hearing about "his GREAT second half". Yeah he hit some homers, but they were way way out of it, and .255 is not a GREAT second half BA, unless you're Bob Buhl.

Still and all, if .255/.346/.542 is anything like his true talent level, he'll be fine. 35 walks in 289 PAs makes that BA unimportant.

What might be more of an issue is why the Mets apparently think that Davis is more than a platoon player. That's all he's ever been. Granted, he's an excellent platoon player, but he should never see a lefty. It was true in the minors, true in the majors, but the Mets don't seem to be able to figure this out. 138 PAs in 2010 probably fooled them into thinking that one of these days, if we just give him time, he might learn to hit a lefty. What they should have done is figured out how much luck was involved in that stretch (tons!), and figured out how best to use Davis. But, that's not what bad teams do. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets paid no attention to BABIP at any level of the organization.

Man, I really hope this isn't a recurrence of the Jungle Fever that hampered Davis last year.

You need an excuse for a 4-for-27 start?

You don't think Sandy Alderson or Paul DePodesta know what BABIP is?
